Tigers' Roar Too Much for Vikings in 7-0 Road Loss

RECAP - PDF | HTML

STOCKTON, Calif. —
The Portland State men's tennis team ran up against a talented team in its road opener Saturday, and it showed in a 7-0 loss to the University of the Pacific (Calif.) at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.

Pacific (4-2) swept the Vikings (1-4) with wins in all six singles matches and all three doubles matches.

The Vikings got some fight at the top of their singles lineup, as both senior Nathan Boniel and freshman Tommy Edwards made it a match against their opponents at lines one and two, respectively.

Edwards, who came into the match on a three-game winning streak, lost a quick first set to Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo, 6-2, but then bounced back to challenge Chinamo in the second set. Edwards took Chinamo to a second-set tiebreaker, but fell in an extended tiebreak, 9-7, to lose the match overall, 6-2, 7-6 (7).

Boniel, meanwhile, took a first-set tiebreaker off Pacific's Miguel Diaz at line one to go up a set early on his match. Diaz, who entered the match ranked 18th in the ITA Northwest region, came back to win the second set 6-3, however, and then won the ensuing match tiebreaker, 10-6.

Boniel has had some tough luck to start his 2017 season, after his record-breaking MVP season in 2016. Boniel has gone 2-3 so far in 2017, but two of his three losses have come to regionally ranked singles players, and the third came against conference opponent Mikus Losbergs of Sacramento State, who was out for revenge after Boniel beat him last season.

Boniel can get back on track immediately, however, as the Vikings return to action tomorrow with a neutral-site match against Hawaii at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center in Stockton, Calif. The Vikings and the Rainbow Warriors will open their match at 1 p.m.
