Vikings Drop Season Opener at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland State men's tennis team opened its season with a 6-1 loss to the University of Oregon on Thursday, coming close to securing the doubles point and picking up a singles victory from sophomore Maas Schotanus.

Portland State moved to 0-1 on the season, while Oregon improved to 3-0.

The Vikings opened the dual with a strong showing in doubles play. Edoardo Cravanzola and Schotanus earned a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Cameron Burton and Lachlan Robertson, giving Portland State a chance to claim the opening point. With Oregon winning on the top court, the doubles point came down to Luca Prino and Hampus Hagglund at No. 3. The pair pushed Vlad Breazu and Declan Galligan to the limit but fell 7-5, giving the Ducks the doubles point.

Portland State's singles lineup featured an entirely underclass group, with freshmen Aarjun Pandit competing at No. 2 and Ignacio Ruiz at No. 4. Sophomores filled out the remainder of the lineup, with Prino at No. 1, Schotanous at No. 3, Cravanzola at No. 5 and Luke Lu at No. 6.

Schotanous carried his momentum from doubles into singles play, earning the Vikings' lone point of the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Matthew Burton at No. 3. Oregon claimed straight-set victories on the remaining courts to secure the 6-1 win.

Portland State will face UO again this weekend, returning to Eugene for a noon matchup on Sunday, Jan. 18.
