THE OPENING TIP
With the number of regular season games dwindling, the Portland State Vikings need to take another step up if they want to rise in the Big Sky Conference standings and seek out a first-round bye in the Big Sky Tournament in March.

The Vikings (12-10, 5-6) took the first step on Thursday night, stopping a four-game losing streak with a stirring come-from-behind win over Idaho State, 74-69. That task will be much tougher on Saturday night when the Vikings host first-place Weber State (14-8, 9-2) at the Stott Center.

PSU got 14 points and a school-record eight steals from SR G Zach Gengler in Thursday's win. Trailing 54-44 with less than seven minutes to play, Gengler made a steal leading to a fastbreak basket and a 19-3 run over the next four minutes. That catapulted the Vikings to the lead, and eventually the win.

The defending Big Sky champions and the team that knocked the Vikings out of last year's Big Sky Tournament, Weber State is as good as ever in 2016-17. Although they took a close 77-74 loss at Sacramento State on Thursday, the Wildcats have won 12 of their last 14 games. Much of that success has come from behind the three-point line. Weber State leads the nation in three-point percentage (.436) and ranks 16th in three-pointers made per game (9.9).

For the Vikings, wins are needed to climb in the Big Sky standings. At 5-6, PSU is tied for seventh with Sacramento State. Montana State is sixth at 6-6 and Montana is fifth at 7-5. So, a win over Weber State would be particularly important for PSU as it goes on the road next week to play Montana State and Montana. The Vikings may then have a chance to leapfrog those two teams in the standings. The top five teams in the Big Sky standings will earn a first-round bye in the Big Sky Tournament (Mar. 7-11).

Portland State has seven conference games remaining, three at home and four on the road. The Vikings are now 8-2 at home. Weber State brings a 5-5 road record to Portland. This will be the only meeting of the regular season between the teams in the Big Sky's unbalanced schedule.

The game will be live streamed at www.GoViks.com/Live. Live stats are available at www.ViksLive.com.

COMING UP
Next week, Portland State returns to the road to play at Montana State (11-13/6-5) on Thursday, followed by Montana (11-13/6-5) on Saturday.

PSU's final home weekend is Feb. 23-25 when the Vikings play Southern Utah (4-20/2-9) and Northern Arizona (6-18/3-8). The regular season concludes with a trip to Northern Colorado (8-14/4-7, Mar. 2) and North Dakota (13-8/8-3, Mar. 4).

SUSTAINABLE AND RECYCLABLE VIKING QUICK NOTES
WINNING LINES
• Portland State is 12-10 this season, 8-2 at home, 4-8 on the road.
• Portland State won five straight earlier this season (Dec. 13-29). It was the longest winning streak since winning six in a row late in the 2008-09 season.
• The Vikings' longest losing streak this season is four games.
Stott Stuff
• PSU has gone 166-64 in 230 games at the Stott Center since the 1996-97 season. Including home games at Memorial Coliseum (12-6) and the Rose Garden (19-9), the Vikings are 197-79 at home over 21 seasons.
• Portland State is 73-35 at home in eight seasons under Tyler Geving.
• Since the start of the 2006-07 season, PSU is 110-38 at home, including 63-31 in Big Sky Conference regular season and tournament games.
• Portland State has lost only eight non-conference home games in the last 10 seasons (45-8). PSU is 25-8 against Division I schools, and 20-0 against lower division schools over that span.

WHO IS HOT?
• CRAZY 8: SR G Zach Gengler tied a 39-year-old school record when he made eight steals in the Vikings win over Idaho State. He matched Terry Adolph who made eight steals in a game against George Fox on Jan. 13, 1978. Gengler has also matched his career-high of 37 steals for a season, set last year. For his career, Gengler has 105 steals in 105 games. He ranks seventh all-time in steals and 10th all-time in games played at PSU. Gengler will tie Freeman Williams in career games played on Saturday night against Weber State (106).
• SHOOTING STAR: JR C Traylin Farris has shot 50% or better in each of his last 15 games. He shoots .610 from the field overall and ranks fourth in the Big Sky.
• JR C Traylin Farris has only 15 turnovers in 21 games and 488 minutes of play for the season.

WHO IS NOT?
• Portland State had a season-high 19 turnovers against Idaho State.
• PSU is shooting .599 from the free throw line in Big Sky Conference games. That has dropped the team's season percentage to .633. The Vikings rank 11th in free throw percentage and last in three-point shooting (.316) in Big Sky games.

ABOUT ALL THOSE OVERTIMES AND POINTS: Despite all the questions, the answers are "no" to PSU's 130-124 triple overtime loss at Eastern Washington. Portland State HAS scored more points in a game (141) and Portland State HAS given up more points (141) - and both were regulation contests. And Portland State HAS played in a longer game. What Portland State has NEVER done is played a game with more TOTAL points. The 254 points scored were the most combined points in PSU history. Portland State had played in two games previously that totaled 243 points (a win and a loss)... Portland State has played in four triple-overtime games in its history, and one quadruple overtime game (a 92-91 win at Northern Arizona on Jan. 4, 2009).

MAGIC NUMBER 35: SR F De'Sean Parsons become the 18th different Viking player in history to score at least 35 points in a game with his performance at Eastern Washington. The feat has been accomplished 77 times with Freeman Williams doing it 41 times. Players have scored exactly 35 points on nine occasions. It is the eighth time in Portland State's Big Sky era that a player has scored 35 or more points.

TRENDING: Here is a look at some Viking trends:
• Portland State is 10-2 when scoring 80 or more points, 0-3 when scoring less than 70.
• The Vikings are 8-1 when leading at halftime, 2-7 when trailing, 2-2 when tied.
• PSU is 9-1 when shooting a higher percentage from the field than its opponents, 3-9 when being outshot.

IT TAKES A THIEF: Portland State set a school record for steals last season with 263 in 31 games (8.48). With 226 steals already this year (10.3), the Vikings are on pace to break that mark again.
• The Vikings currently rank fourth in the nation in steals.
• PSU has had nine or more steals in 17 games this season.
• SR G Zach Gengler tied a school record with eight steals in a win over Idaho State (2/9).
• SR G Calaen Robinson leads the Big Sky Conference and ranks eighth in the nation in steals (2.66) and set a career- high with six against North Dakota (12/29).
• Robinson ranks third all-time in steals at Portland State (113) and Gengler ranks seventh (105).
• Three Vikings rank in the top eight in steals in the Big Sky: Robinson, Gengler, and SR F De'Sean Parsons.
• PSU had a season-high 19 steals in a win over North Dakota (12/29).

HOT SHOTS: Portland State is averaging 86.1 points per game - the most of any team in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings have scored 99 or more points in six games this season. The scoring can be attributed to good shooting, an up-tempo pace, and an ability to force opponent turnovers.
• The Vikings shot .530 or better in eight of their wins.
• Portland State shoots .484 from the field overall and has failed to score at least 70 points only three times this season.
• PSU is forcing 16.6 turnovers per game while making 10.3 steals per game.
• Last year, PSU averaged 77.7 points. The last time PSU averaged over 82 points was 1976-77 when the Vikings aver-aged 91.0 points per game.

100 WATCH: Portland State has had a number of meetings with the number 100 this season. Here are the highlights:
• Coach Tyler Geving won his 100th career game on Dec. 3 against UTRGV. Geving has the second-most career wins by a coach in PSU history (109).
• The Vikings have scored 100 or more points five times.
• SR G Zach Gengler played in his 100th career game on Jan. 19 against Montana. Gengler is on pace to finish his career among the top five in games played all-time at PSU. He has now played in 105 games.
• SR G Calaen Robinson passed 100 career steals (113) as has SR G Zach Gengler (105).
