DAY 1 RECAP
SEATTLE, Wash. — Back in full action for the first time in two weeks, the Portland State track & field team showed it hadn't been slacking during that time, as the Vikings improved on several of their marks on the second day of the UW Invitational Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor facility.
Â
The biggest improvement came in the men's long jump, where sophomore
Jean-Luc Toku placed eighth overall with a seven-inch indoor personal best of 22-02.25 (6.76m). Toku's mark moves him into eighth all-time in the indoor long jump at Portland State, his first top ten in the indoor or outdoor long jump.
Â
Junior
Ta'mara Richey nearly matched her own personal best in the women's long jump, as she finished third overall with a mark of 18-10.50 (5.75m) – a quarter of an inch behind the personal best she set at the 2015 Big Sky Championships. Richey jumped 18-09.25 (5.72m) in the pentathlon long jump at the Ed Jacoby Invitational two weeks ago, but improved on that mark Saturday. Richey also moves up one spot into seventh within the Big Sky this season in the long jump off her mark at the UW Invitational.
Â
Saturday also marked the season debut for a couple of athletes in their specialties, including All-Big Sky runner
Ben Richardson, who ran his first 800-meter race. Richardson, who was an All-Big Sky runner in the indoor and outdoor 800 meters last season, won his section of the 800 meters with a season-opening time of 1:55.17.
Â
Sophomore
Rachel Vinjamuri, meanwhile, ran her first 400-meter race of the season Saturday, a season after she scored for the Vikings with a sixth-place finish at the Big Sky Championships. Vinjamuri placed seventh overall in the 400 meters Saturday, finishing in 57.22 seconds – ahead of her first two 400-meter times in 2016.
Â
Vinjamuri also ran the anchor leg of the Vikings' 4x400-meter relay team that shaved over eight seconds off its time two weeks ago at the UW Indoor Preview. Vinjamuri joined
Maya Jackson,
Genna Settle and
Nia Powdrell in placing eighth in the relay Saturday in a seasonal-best time of 3:53.76.
Â
The Viking men shaved 6.5 seconds off their own time in the 4x400-meter relay Saturday, finishing sixth overall in 3:20.17.
Christian Wood, Richardson,
Antoine Wilder and
Mitchell Gable ran the relay for the Vikings, and moved up to ninth all-time in the event with their finish Saturday.
Â
Freshman
Kamal-Craig Golaube, meanwhile, moved into seventh all-time in the men's 60-meter hurdles with his time of 8.50 seconds in the prelims of the event Saturday. Golaube shaved .12 seconds off his time of 8.62 two weeks ago at the UW Indoor Preview, and also moved up to 13th in the Big Sky this season.
Â
Senior
Akayla Anderson advanced to the finals of the women's 60-meter hurdles, after receiving an automatic berth out of the qualifying rounds of the event. Anderson finished fourth in both the prelims and finals of the event in times of 8.65 and 8.69 seconds, respectively.
Â
The Vikings will now turn their attention to the Idaho Duals in Moscow, Idaho, where they'll get a mini-preview of the Big Sky Championships with a smaller meet comprising of athletes only from the University of Idaho, Montana, Eastern Washington and Gonzaga.
Â
The Idaho Duals will take place Friday, Feb. 3, with events tentatively starting at 11 a.m. (PT).
