Cisneros Breaks School Record in 5,000 Meters to Open UW Invitational Friday

RESULTS - PDF | HTML

SEATTLE, Wash. —
The last Portland State fans saw of Alex Cisneros, he was breaking the school record in the cross country 10k at the NCAA West Regional last November. Friday, in his first meet since then and the first meet of his 2017 indoor season, Cisneros broke another school record – this time in the indoor 5,000 meters – leading the Portland State track & field team on the first day of the UW Invitational.

Cisneros finished the 5,000 meters in 14:43.07 Friday, breaking Andrew Salg's six-year-old school record of 14:50.81 by more than seven seconds.

Cisneros' time also beats his old personal best of 14:57.77 by more than 14 seconds, and moves him into fourth in the Big Sky within the 5,000 meters this season.

All-Big Sky cross country runner Sarah Medved also made her indoor season debut Friday while competing in the women's 5,000 meters. Medved finished in 18:09.70, ranking her third in the Big Sky within the women's 5,000 meters in 2017.

Senior Genna Settle lowered her own Big Sky-leading time in the women's 200 meters Friday, as her finish in 24.66 seconds beat the time of 24.91 seconds she ran in her season debut at the UW Indoor Preview two weeks ago.

Freshman Nia Powdrell also lowered her time in the 200 meters two weeks ago, as she finished in 25.67 seconds Friday, close to three-tenths of a second faster than her time of 25.96 seconds at the UW Indoor Preview.

Junior Spenser Schmidt set a new personal best in the men's 200 meters while finishing 12th overall in 22.34 seconds. Schmidt's time knocks one-hundredth of a second off the personal best he set at last year's Husky Classic, and moves him up to 14th in the Big Sky this season.

The Vikings continue with the second day of the UW Invitational tomorrow, with events starting at 9 a.m. (PT).
