Vikings Drop Third Overtime Match of Big Sky Season with 3-2 Loss to Bengals Friday

Box Score BOX SCORE - PDF | HTML

POCATELLO, Idaho —
If Big Sky matches ended at 90 minutes like in professional leagues, then the Portland State women's soccer team would be unbeaten in conference play so far in 2016. Unfortunately for the Vikings, that's not the case, and the Vikings encountered another cruel result Friday, losing 3-2 in double overtime to Idaho State – the Vikings' third overtime loss in their first five Big Sky matches.

The Vikings (3-9-1, 1-3-1 Big Sky) twice led the Bengals (6-9-0, 3-2-0 Big Sky) in the second half, but the Bengals erased both deficits to force overtime, and then scored the game-winner in the 108th minute.

Katherine Roberts scored the game-winner for the Bengals with less than three minutes left in the second overtime period, the second-latest goal the Vikings have conceded in overtime since overtime periods moved to 10 minutes in 2002.

The overtime loss to the Bengals comes on the heels of back-to-back overtime losses for the Vikings at Northern Arizona and Southern Utah on Sept. 23 and 25, respectively. The Vikings bounced back with a four-point weekend against Eastern Washington and Montana last weekend, but got bit again against the Bengals Friday.

The road in general has been cruel to the Vikings so far this season, as all three of their recent overtime losses have come on the road, while 27 of the 32 goals the Vikings have allowed this season have come on the road.

The Vikings led early in the match Friday, however, as sophomore Krystal de Ramos put the Vikings up 1-0 with her third goal of the season in the 15th minute. Junior Katie Forsee fed de Ramos on the play, giving Forsee her second assist of the season.

The Bengals outshot the Vikings over the remainder of the first half, though, and then leveled the match in the 60th minute after a flurry of shots at the start of the second half.

Senior Aurora Bodenhamer responded with a goal in the 67th minute to put the Vikings back up by a goal at 2-1. Bodenhamer's goal gave the senior her 11th career goal, moving her into a tie for seventh all-time in career goals at Portland State, equal with Julie Forrest (2001-04) and Katie Miyake (2002-04). Bodenhamer will move into a tie for sixth all-time with her next goal, which would tie her with Frankie Ross, who had 12 career goals from 2007-10.

Redshirt freshman Maxine Nagramada assisted on Bodenhamer's goal, giving Nagramada her first career assist at Portland State.

Once again, the Bengals responded well to the Vikings' goal, however, and eventually knotted the match at 2-2 in the 85th minute on a rebound shot from 10 yards out.

Redshirt junior Breanne Chilton-Eddy sent one final shot on goal in regulation in the 88th minute, but Idaho State saved that and the match went to overtime.

Bodenhamer, meanwhile, had a shot blocked in the second minute of the first overtime period, while Chilton-Eddy had another shot blocked in the first minute of the second overtime period.

Those were the Vikings' only shots in either overtime period, however, and the Bengals eventually broke through with Roberts' goal in the 108th minute.

The Vikings will hope for a more friendly reception from the soccer gods when they return home for a match against Idaho Sunday. The Vandals went unbeaten at 9-0-1 in Big Sky play last season, and moved into the Big Sky lead again this season with a 5-1 road win over Sacramento State Friday.

The Vikings and Vandals will kick off at 1 p.m. (PT) Sunday at Hillsboro Stadium.

Match Notes: The Vikings fall to 10-9-1 all-time against the Bengals with their loss Friday…The Vikings also hadn't lost to the Bengals in Pocatello since 2004, and had won nine of their last 10 against the Bengals before Friday…With de Ramos' goal Friday, the Vikings now have four players with at least three goals for the first time since 2013.
