Settle, Tufty Set Pair of Records at OSU High Performance Meet

RESULTS

CORVALLIS, Ore. —
Sophomore Genna Settle blew away the field while crushing the meet record in the 100 meters at the OSU High Performance Meet Friday, while junior Rockwell Tufty broke his own school record in the high jump as the Portland State track and field teams competed at the Whyte Track and Field Center.

Settle won the 100 in 11.70 seconds, .19 seconds faster than her nearest competitor, and more than a full quarter of a second faster than the previous meet record of 11.96 seconds.

Additionally, Settle's time marks a new personal best for the sophomore by .05 seconds, and moves her up to fifth all-time in the event at Portland State, behind only senior teammate Jasmine Woods and all-time sprinting greats Geronne Black, Karene King and Jernise Saunders.

Settle's record time Friday also puts her right on the qualifying bubble for the NCAA West Preliminary meet at the end of May. Settle moved into a tie for 46th with her time Friday, with the top 48 declared student-athletes qualifying for the regional meet that feeds directly into the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.

Tufty also put himself on the qualifying bubble with his new record Friday, as he cleared 6-10.25 (2.09m) on his third attempt at the height, moving him into a tie for 46th in the NCAA west. Tufty's clearance marks a half-inch improvement over his old best of 6-09.75 (2.08m), set at last season's Big Sky Outdoor Championships, and moves him up to third in the Big Sky this season.

The rest of the Vikings also added four other event wins Friday, starting with sophomore Baileh Simms, who led a great showing from the Vikings in the women's long jump. Simms won the event with a jump of 19-06.25 (5.95m), edging out freshman Ta'mara Richey, who finished a quarter of an inch back of Simms at 19-06.00 (5.94m).

Richey's mark sets a new personal best for the freshman by 3.5 inches, and gives her a chance of qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary meet in her first year as a Viking. Richey ranks 40th in the NCAA West after her jump Friday, putting her within the projected 48-member field with two weekends left before the qualifying period ends.

Settle also set a new personal best in the long jump, as she placed sixth in the event with a mark of 18-01.75 (5.53m).

Senior Jazmin Ratcliff, meanwhile, added another event win for the Vikings in the 100-meter hurdles, as she lowered her Big Sky-leading time in the event with her finish in 13.78 seconds. Ratcliff, who broke the meet record at the OSU High Performance last season, now leads her teammate, CeCelia Jackson, by .07 seconds within the Big Sky this season, and ranks right on the bubble for the NCAA West Preliminary. Ratcliff moved into a tie for 48th in the NCAA west with her time Friday, but will likely need to lower her time further if she wants to qualify for her third straight regional meet in the 100-meter hurdles.

Woods also won the 200 meters for the Vikings Friday, edging out Oregon State's Kerissa D'Arpino at the line to win in 24.26 seconds to D'Arpino's 24.27 seconds.

Woods also ran the third leg of the Vikings 4x100-meter relay team that won its third race of the season. Woods joined regular relay teammates Ratcliff, Settle and Simms in blowing away the rest of the field Friday, as they finished more than a second faster than their closest competitor in 45.76 seconds.

Outside of the event winners, sophomore Whitney Diggs and senior Nettie Wayne also set huge personal bests in the 100 meters, finishing in 12.15 and 12.25 seconds, respectively. Diggs' time shaved more than a quarter of a second off her old best of 12.42 seconds, while Wayne shaved .15 seconds off her old best of 12.40.

Junior Kris Tollefson also shaved close to 2.5 seconds off her personal best in the 800 meters, as she finished in 2:14.24, well ahead of the PR of 2:16.68 she set at the John Knight Twilight meet earlier this season.

Additionally, the Vikings' men's distance crew set a couple of different personal bests in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters Friday. Sophomore Ben Richardson beat out his old personal best in the 1,500 by close to 1.5 seconds, finishing the invitational section of the event in 3:54.92.

Senior Andrew Landstrom and freshman Jose Macias followed with new personal bests in the 5,000 meters, meanwhile, finishing in 15:02.88 and 15:28.61, respectively. Landstrom's time marks an 11-second improvement over his old best in the 5,000 meters, which he set at 15:14.04 two weekends ago at the Oregon Relays.

Junior Major Oni also continued his strong recent performances in the hammer, as he cracked 160 feet in the event for the second straight meet with his mark of 160-05.75 (48.91m) at the special hammer section of the meet Thursday at McArthur Field on the campus of Western Oregon University.

The Vikings will now continue a busy weekend Saturday, as they split up to compete at the Mt. Hood Track Festival in Gresham, Ore., and the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, Calif. Senior Camelia Mayfield and sophomore Cheryn Trapp were late additions to the elite Payton Jordan Invitational, but will run in the 5,000 meters for the Vikings.
