THE OPENING TIP

     The Portland State women's basketball team opens its regular season home slate Saturday, Nov. 21 against NAIA Division II Warner Pacific. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. PT. 
     Saturday's game against Warner Pacific will be the first of three-straight home games, in the span of seven days, for the Vikings. They host the University of Portland (Nov. 24) and UC Davis (Nov. 27) Thanksgiving week. In all, Portland State will play six non-conference home games. 
     Prior to Saturday's game, the team will hold a free basketball clinic for boys and girls, grades 1-8, from 12-1 p.m. in the Stott Center small gym. Clinic attendees will get free tickets to the game at 2 p.m.

CANNED FOOD: The Portland State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be collecting non-perishable food items at the Vikings' game against cross-town rival the University of Portland on Tuesday, Nov. 24. All donations will be donated to the Food Pantry on campus. 

LAST TIME OUT
• Portland State lost its first two games of the season on the road. The Vikings dropped their season opener, 84-69, at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). They then fell 89-71 at Long Beach State (11/15).
• Freshman G Michaela Kay opened the season with 22 points going 7-for-15 from the floor, 5-for-11 from three-point range, and 3-4 at the free throw line. Kay's 22 points is the most ever by a Viking in their career debut. 
• Junior F Danah Haley posted back-to-back double-digit scoring games to open the season. Haley posted 10 point in 18 minutes coming off the bench against the Titans and 15 points and five rebounds against the 49ers, again off the bench. 
• In all, seven Vikings (Michaela Kay, Bree Shepard, Ashley Torres Negron, Kian McNair, Pia Jurhar, Montana Walters, and Corey James) all made their Portland State debuts. 

WARNER PACIFIC QUICK HITS
• Head Coach Matt Gregg is 104-104 in eight seasons at Warner Pacific. The Knights have made the Cascade Collegiate Conference postseason tournament five times. 
• Warner Pacific went 11-19 overall and 4-14 in CCC play in 2014-15. They return three starters and five letterwinners from a year ago. 
• Warner Pacific is 2-0 this season with wins over Cal State Maritime (71-48) and UC Merced (62-53). The Knights have also played three exhibition games against Division I opponents losing to Portland, Washington, and Oregon. They play an exhibition game against Saint Martin's University Tuesday, Nov. 17. 
• Senior F Lindsay Loe leads the Knights with 14.5 points per game in their two counting games this season. She is the reigning CCC Player of the Week. She posted 20 points going 9-for-12 from the floor in their win over CS Maritime. She is also second on the team with 8.5 rebounds per game.

VS. WARNER PACIFIC: Saturday's game against Warner Pacific will be the first counting game for the Vikings between the two schools.  

TEAM NOTES: Here are some quick-hitters about the Portland State women's basketball team through two games:
• The Vikings are 0-2 overall this season. 0-2 on the road and open their home slate this week. 
• Portland State is averaging 70.0 points per game this season while opponents are scoring 86.5 ppg (-16.5 scoring margin, 10th in the Big Sky Conference). 
• Portland State is shooting .372 from the floor, .350 from three-point range, and .750 from the free throw line. Portland State averages 7.0 three-pointers per game. 
• Portland State is fourth in the Big Sky Conference with at +8.5 rebounding margin. 

DANAH HALEY: Here are some quick hitters about Danah Haley, a junior forward from Los Angeles, CA.
• Opened the season with 10 points off the bench at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). Went 4-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-3 at the line, before fouling out of the game. 
• Scored career-high 15 points, again off the bench, at Long Beach State (11/15), going 4-for-10 from the floor and 7-for-9 at the line. 
• Now has three career double-digit scoring games.   
• Is second on the team, 17th in the league, with 12.5 points per game and leads the team in free throw attempts with 12. 

PIA JURHAR: Here are some quick hitters about Pia Jurhar, a freshman forward from Vienna, Austria. 
• Started the first two games for the Vikings, averaging 3.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. 
• Went 1-for-2 from the floor and from the line fore three points, while pulling down seven rebounds, in career debut. 
• Played on the FIBA Senior Women's National Team that won the European Championship for Small Countries.

KIAN MCNAIR: Here are some quick hitters about Kian McNair, a freshman guard from Vallejo, CA. 
• Started both games this season for the Vikings and is averaging 8.5 points per game. 
• Made Portland State debut with five points and five rebounds at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). 
• Posted first double-digit scoring game with 12 points in 24 minutes at Long Beach State (11/15). Went 3-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 at the line. 

CICI WEST: Here are some quick hitters about Cici West, a sophomore guard from Seattle, WA. 
• Came off the bench in first two games of the season. Leads the team, and is seventh in the Big Sky, with 7.5 rebounds per game
• Posted a career-high 14 rebounds at Long Beach State (11/15) while adding first eight points of the season. 
• One of three letterwinners returning from the 2014-15 season. Played in 27 games, making seven starts. Averaged 3.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last season. 

BREE SHEPARD: Here are some quick hitters about Bree Shepard, a freshman guard from San Diego, CA. 
• Third on the team in scoring with 11.5 points per game. Shooting .471 from the floor on the season (8-for-17). 
• Made career debut scoring six points off the bench at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). 
• Posted first double-digit scoring game with 17 points at Long Beach State (11/15). Her 17 points is the second most by a Vikings this season. She went 6-for-12 from the floor with a three-pointer and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line against the 49ers. 

ASHLEY TORRES NEGRON: Here are some quick hitters about Ashley Torres Negron, a junior guard from Morovis, Puerto Rico. 
• Fourth on the team in scoring with 9.5 points per game. Pulling down 4.0 rebounds per game. 
• Leads the team with a 1.000 mark at the free-throw line starting the season a perfect 11-for-11, which leads the Big Sky Conference. 
• Opened her Portland State career with 14 points at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). Went 2-for-8 from the floor, both three-pointers, and 8-for-8 from the line. 

ALICIA CARLINE: Here are some quick hitters about Alicia Carline, a senior forward from Fielding, New Zealand. 
• Started both games so far this season. Averaging 2.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. 
• Opened the season with eight rebounds and five blocks at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). It was her third game with five blocks. Has recorded a block in 10-of-11 career Portland State games. She leads the league in total blocked shots with seven and is second with 3.5 per game. 
• Missed 20 games in 2014-15 as a junior due to injury and illness. Played in nine games making eight starts and averaged 6.9 points and 6.3 rebounds in 21.7 minutes. Shot .433 going 26-for-60.

MICHAELA KAY: Here are some quick hitters about Michaela Kay, a freshman guard from Spokane, WA. 
• Became first Viking in history to record 20 points in debut posting 22 points at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). Went 7-for-15 from the floor, 5-for-11 from three point range, and 3-4 from the line. Led the Vikings with eight rebounds. 
• Leads the Vikings, and is ninth in the Big Sky, with 14.0 points per game this season. Also leads the team with five assists in 36.5 minutes per game, second in the conference. 
• Has hit at least two three-pointers in each game this season. Is tied for third in the Big Sky with 3.5 three-pointers per game. 

PRESEASON TEAM NOTES: Here are some quick-hitters about the Portland State women's basketball team heading into the season:
• Portland State went 4-25 overall and 2-16 in Big Sky conference play en route to a last place finish in the league. It was the Vikings' worst record since the 2004-05 season when they went 3-23 overall and 1-13 in Big Sky Conference play. 
• Portland State returns just three letterwinners from the 2014-15 season. The Vikings lost nine letterwinners and all five starters off last year's squad. That includes five of its top six scorers from a year ago. 
• Portland State returners have a combined four letters of experience at Portland State. There are a combined seven total letters of NCAA Division I experience on the roster, including transfers and redshirts. 
• Portland State adds five incoming freshmen, five transfers, and a pair of redshirts for 2015-16. Three of the five transfers will have to sit out the season due to NCAA Transfer Rules.
• Portland State has five foreign born players on the roster: Courtney West (Sydney, Australia); Pia Jurhar (Vienna, Austria); Te Oramae Solomon (Auckland, New Zealand); Alicia Carline (Fielding, New Zealand); Ashley Torres Negron (Morovis, Puerto Rico)
• Portland State is in its 20th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference 
• Construction of the new Viking Pavilion will begin in late fall of 2015. The Pavilion will consist of an upgraded Stott Center facility, including a new arena for Viking basketball, as well as athletic training enhancements, academic upgrades and overall facility enhancements. The Viking Pavilion will more than double the capacity of PSU's home court (to be situated on the east side of the building) to somewhere between 3,000-5,000 seats.
• The 12-team Big Sky Conference has a new post-season set-up and format. The Big Sky will move its conference tournament to a neutral site in Reno, NV. All 12 teams will be part of the tournament for the first time as it takes place at the Reno Events Center.
