SALEM, Ore.
— Senior Amanda Boman has been the Portland State women's cross country team's most consistent runner this season, and on Saturday, she was the class of the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational. Boman beat out 185 other runners to win the women's 5,000-meter race at Bush's Pasture Park, giving the senior runner her first career win at Portland State while also leading the Vikings to their first-ever team victory in Salem.

Behind Boman's individual win, Portland State finished with 75 team points, 25 points ahead of second-place Portland. Seattle Pacific (105 points), Point Loma (119) and host Willamette (130) rounded out the top five.

The Viking women have shown steady improvement from meet to meet and that was on full display on Saturday. Facing their largest field of the season, Portland State placed three runners in the top nine and four in the top 18. Boman's top time of 17:30.9 was more than four seconds faster than any other athlete on the course, and beat the previous all-time best by a PSU women's runner at the meet by eight full seconds. Boman becomes just the second Viking women's runner to ever win at the Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational, joining Amber Rozcicha, who won in 2012.

She also set a personal best by more than half a minute with the win, and now ranks sixth all-time at Portland State in 5,000-meter cross country races run under all conditions. Boman's previous personal record for a 5K was an 18:01.4 time at the 2014 Big Sky Championships.

Junior Cheryn Trapp (18:02.4) and sophomore Sarah Medved (18:03.4) finished a second apart to take the eighth and ninth spots. Kaila Ann Gibson snuck into the top 20 in the No. 18 slot (18:17.2).

Trapp's finish was 1.4 seconds better than her previous personal best, which also set in Salem at the Oak Knoll Loop Run two seasons ago. Medved likewise set a personal best, topping her time of 18:15.5 set at last season's Big Sky Championships.

Portland State also got personal bests from freshman Jocelyn Reynolds (18:48.3) and sophomore Nyalual Beng (19:36.2).

The Vikings will look to continue their improvement at the Emerald City Open in Seattle on Oct. 17. It will be Portland State's final event in advance of the Big Sky Championships on Oct. 31.
