CEDAR CITY, UTAH – Senior
Amanda Boman is officially an All-Big Sky runner. Boman cracked the top 10 at the Big Sky Conference Championship on Saturday as she led the Portland State women's cross country team to eighth-place honors.
Â
Boman claimed 10th place overall, finishing the 5,000-meter race in 18:38.4 and earning her All-Big Sky honors. She is just the second Portland State woman to finish in the top 10 at the conference championship since 1999. Sarah Dean took seventh for the Vikings in 2013. Boman's finish is also tied for the third-highest finish in school history at the Big Sky meet.
Â
Boman finished just two seconds back of Eastern Washington's Catie Arrigoni for the No. 9 spot in the women's race. Montana's Makenna Morley, who bested every runner in the field by at least 10 seconds, came in 53 seconds in front of Boman.
Â
Thanks in large part to Boman's all-conference performance, Portland State broke the 200-point mark (199). Boman was followed in the Vikings' lineup by
Sarah Medved who finished 21st (19:03.5) and
Kaila Ann Gibson who placed 37th (19:26.9). Also scoring for Portland State were
Cheryn Trapp (65th, 20:11.3) and
Nevina De Luca (70th, 20:20.5).
Jocelyn Reynolds placed 78th (21:00.7) and
Kennedy Martin took 86th (23:04.9).
Â
Weber State won the women's championship (39 points) by placing each of its five point-scorers in the top 15. Eastern Washington finished second with 75 points and Northern Arizona rounded out the top three at 85 points.
Â
In the men's championship 8,000-meter race, host Southern Utah defended its home course by winning with a razor-thin 26 points. Southern Utah had all seven of its runners place 13th or better, with its five scorers each cracking the top 10. Northern Arizona – champion from 2014 – came in second (43) with Weber State finishing a distant third (96).
Â
The Portland State men claimed ninth place (233) in the 12-team field.
Aaron Campbell led the Viking men as he took 21st place (26:43.4). He finished just a couple seconds ahead of teammate
Alex Cisneros who came in 23rd (26:45.9).
Â
Campbell and Cisneros were followed by
Ben Richardson (56th, 27:56.5) and
Neil Seibert (66th, 28:20.1).
Justin Wikler also scored for the Vikings by finishing 75th (28:48.6).
John Talik crossed the finish line just a couple strides behind Wikler to place 76th (28:50.3).
Spencer Russell capped the race for Portland State by taking 80th place (29:08.2).
