SEATTLE – In swirling wind and a steady Seattle downpour, the Portland State cross country teams wrapped up their first season under head coach
Brent Ericksen on Friday at the NCAA West Regional. The Viking women finished 21st out of 35 teams (601 points) while the men claimed 26th place (774) in the 30-team 10,000-meter race at Jefferson Park Golf Course.
Â
In the women's 6,000-meter championship, Oregon and Boise State earned automatic bids to next week's NCAA National Championships in Louisville, Ky. as the top two teams. Oregon (79) edged out Boise State (80) by a single point to capture the regional team title. Washington (105), Stanford (121) and San Francisco (182) rounded out the top five.
Â
Host Washington (63) defended its home course and won the men's championship, finishing 20 points ahead of second-place Stanford (83) who also secured a spot at nationals. Oregon stayed in contention for an at-large bid by placing third (99), beating out Washington State (125) and Boise State (137).
Â
Portland State senior
Amanda Boman paced the Viking women all season, and so it was again at regionals. Boman placed 74th with a time of 21:59.8 to cap her cross country career. In the unfavorable weather, she finished her final event strong, making up eight spots in the last two-thirds of the race.
Â
Also cracking the top 100 were
Kaila Ann Gibson and
Sarah Medved. Gibson nabbed 93rd place (22:17.3) and Medved took 100th (22:19.4).
Â
Cheryn Trapp crossed the finish line in 22:56.6 (154th place) and
Kennedy Martin came through at 23:34.5 (191st) to score points for the Vikings.
Â
The Portland State men were unable to put a runner in the top 100 of the stacked regional race.
Aaron Campbell was the Vikings' top finisher in 125th place (33:48.9).
John Talik was next in the No. 152 slot (34:23.8).
Â
The other five Portland State men then all finished within 10 seconds of each other.
Ben Richardson (167th, 34:48),
Alex Cisneros (172nd, 34:56.2) and
Neil Seibert (176th, 35:12.5) led that cluster to score points for the team.
