Portland State Women's Soccer Spring Update

The Portland State women's soccer has competed in four-matches since its first spring contest against the University of Portland on March 8. The Viks played in a day-night doubleheader on April 14 as the team took on Seattle U at Hillsboro Stadium and then followed it up with a match at Concordia at 7:30 p.m. Portland State then played in a second doubleheader on April 20 as the team took on Seattle Pacific in the morning and St. Martin's in the evening.

"The spring games provide our players an opportunity to develop, as well as make a case for themselves to be a part of our top 18 in the fall,” head coach Laura Schott said. “We play multiple games in a day to give our athletes additional playing opportunities."

Portland State's matches against Seattle and Concordia were very similar as both matches were physical and evenly matched affairs.

“Seattle and Concordia are good teams and those matches are always closely contested, today was no different,” Schott said.

The day was highlighted by rising freshman Tamia Hasan who scored for the first time this spring as the Riverside, Calif., native was PSU's lone goal scorer against Seattle. Angela Haluska got the start in net for the Vikings against the Redhawks, recording her first clean sheet of the spring season, while Caitlin Plese started between the pipes against Concordia, allowing one goal in the contest.

Next on the docket was Seattle Pacific and St. Martin's as the pair provided a new challenge for PSU. Seattle Pacific won the division II national championship in 2008 and according to Schott “St. Martin's is a very good team that has improved a lot over the past year.”

PSU defense and goalkeeping was on show once again as both Haluska and Plese recorded shutouts and the Vikings got their lone goal (against Seattle Pacific) from a likely source as rising freshman Lynsey Gaines scored her second of the season, taking a cross from Beka Lofstedt. That is Gaines' second goal of the spring as she also tallied a marker against cross-town rival Portland.

“Thus far our spring schedule has provided us with a good opportunity to evaluate our young team,” Schott said. “Players who may not have played much last fall are getting the opportunity to show the staff why they should travel with us next fall.”

The Viking soccer team gets back at it on Saturday as the squad will play Western Washington University at the Peter W. Stott Center practice field. Match time is slated for 2 p.m.
