PORTLAND – Senior guard
Kate Lanz posted a game-high 20 points to lead the Vikings to a 75-67 win over the Columbia Lions Sunday afternoon at the Peter W. Stott Center. Lanz just missed her first career triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and a career-high nine assists. It was her third 20-point performance in the first five games of the year.
Lanz scored her 20 points on 4-for-10 shooting from the field including a three pointer. She did most of her damage at the free-throw line going 11-for-13. Seven of her 10 rebounds came on the defensive glass.
Senior forward
Angela Misa added her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out of the contest with less than a minute to play. She went 5-for-9 from the floor and 1-for-2 from the line.
Junior guard
Lariel Powell scored a career-high 16 points in the ballgame going 5-for-11 from the floor including a career-best two three-pointers. She is averaging 7.4 points per game so far this season.
Emily Easom posted her fourth consecutive double-digit scoring performance with a season-high 15 points on 5-of-11 from the floor. She added a three-pointer and four free throws in the game.
Portland State shot a season-high .446 from the floor while it held Columbia to .345 shooting. The Vikings out rebounded the Lions and had a 32-to-20 advantage in the paint.
Powell gave the Vikings a three-point lead at 9-6 early in the first half before a jumper from Misa a minute later put the Vikings up five at 13-8. The Lions came back and tied the game at 15-15 with just less than nine minutes remaining in the half on a free throw.
It stayed a one-possession game until Powell once again put the Vikings up five with her second three-pointer of the game with 2:29 left in the first. The Lions once again tied the game as it went to the half all knotted at 33-33. Powell led the Vikings with nine first-half points with Easom tallying eight while Lanz had seven.
Portland State got out to a quick four-point lead at 37-33 after back-to-back buckets from
Allie Brock and
Keaton McFadden. Columbia would not go away and scored the next four to tie the game at 37-37.
The Lions took the lead and held it until Easom laid it in to give the Vikings a 50-49 lead with 9:40 left in the game. After the teams traded points to 57-57, the Vikings broke the game wide open with a 9-0 run to go up 66-57 with under four minutes remaining.
Columbia tried to mount a comeback but would get no closer than six points as Portland State would close out the game 75-67. Lanz scored 13 of her 20 points in the second half with much of it coming late at the line as the Lions continued to foul to extend the game.
Portland State will head out on the road for its first road test of the year next Friday, Dec. 6 when it travels to Gonzaga. The Vikings and Bulldogs will faceoff at 6 p.m. PT. It will be the first of three straight road games for the Vikings.
