Vikings Down Warriors for First Win of the Season

– Senior forward Allie Brock put up a career-high 23 points to lead the Vikings to their first win of the season, 74-62, over Corban University Tuesday night at the Peter W. Stott Center.

Brock went 8-for-16 from the floor in the game with a career-high four three-pointers. She entered the game 1-for-11 all-time from distance. It was Brock's third straight double-digit scoring performance to start season bringing her season average to 17.7 points per game.

"I was really proud with the way we won tonight," seventh-year head coach Sherri Murrell said following the game. "We played the style of defense that we wanted and we were patient on the offensive side. Allie Brock continues to play great this season. She is playing with a lot of confidence an is getting the results."

Three other Vikings scored in double-digits led by Emily Easom's 13. She hit a pair of three-pointers while tallying a team-high four assists. The Vikings went 8-for-17 from three-point range.

Senior guard Kate Lanz added 11 points for her third straight double-digit scoring night to start the season. She went 5-for-10 from the floor with three assists and three rebounds. Lariel Powell tied her career high with 10 points on the night going 5-for-6 with four rebounds and four assists.

Portland State (1-2 overall) outscored Corban (2-3) 24-to-16 in the paint and 24-to-12 off of turnovers. The Vikings turned the ball over a season-low 10 times and had a 47-to-37 rebounding advantage.

The Vikings quickly got out to a five-point lead at 5-0 after a Brock three-pointer, her first of the season. The Warriors came back and tied the game at 8-8 with a three pointer of their own. After Corban tied the game for a second time at 12-12, Keaton McFadden hit a jumper in the paint, giving the Vikings the lead at 14-12, and they never looked back.

Portland State never trailed in the ball game but did not run away with it in the first half and led Corban 35-31 at the break.

Brock had 12 of her 23 in the first half including two three-pointers. Easom added six for the Vikings in the first half. PSU was outrebounded in the first half 21-to-16 but came out and had a plus-15 rebounding margin in the second half.

The Vikings began to separate in the second building up a 16-point lead at 52-36 with just over 12 minutes to play in regulation. They increased their lead to a game-high 21 points with less than four minutes remaining.

The Warriors cut the lead late before the Vikings took the game 74-62 picking up their first win of the season. Brock again led the Vikings in scoring for the half with 11 while Lanz and Easom each added seven.

The Vikings next take the court against Princeton Saturday, Nov. 30 for a 12 p.m. tip. It will be the first of two consecutive games against Ivy League opponents. The Vikings will come back the next day and face Columbia Sunday, Dec. at 2 p.m.
