Angela Misa scored 15 points and
Allison Greene scored 14 but it was not enough as the Portland State Vikings fell to the Eastern Washington Eagles, 68-56, in a Dam Cup rivalry game Monday night at the Peter W. Stott Center.
With the loss Portland State drops to 9-9 overall and 3-6 in Big Sky Conference play. The Vikings struggled from the floor shooting 38.9 percent and turned the ball over 22 times leading to 27 points for the Eagles.
Misa scored four points in the first half but turned it on in the second scoring 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting with five rebounds and a pair of blocks. Green scored her 14 points going 6-for-13 from the floor with a 3-pointer.
Portland State took and early 6-3 lead on a Greene jumper but Eastern Washington (10-8 overall, 6-3 Big Sky Conference) scored the next seven points to take a four-point lead at 10-6. Greene cut the lead to one and then Misa hit a jumper to give the Vikings the lead again at 13-12.
Greene hit a jumper with 4:55 left in the first capping a 10-0 run for the Vikings giving them their largest lead of the game at 28-22. The Eagles stormed right back with six straight points tying the game at 28-28.
The Eagles hit a three pointer with a minute left in the half to go up 34-30 at the break. In all, the game was tied six times and the lead changed hands 10 times just in the first half.
The Vikings scored the first five points of the second half to take the lead again at 35-34. The Eagles retook the lead on their next possession and did not trail the rest of the game.
Eastern Washington opened up a an eight-point lead with just under seven minutes remaining before the Vikings cut the lead to three points on a pair of free throws from senior guard
Courtney VanBrocklin. VanBrocklin, the Vikings leading scorer, scored just nine points in the game but did have six assists.
After the Vikings cut the lead to three, Eastern Washington hit a pair of 3-pointers to go up by nine. They increased their lead to 12 points and won the game 68-56.
Eastern Washington's Hayley Hodgins scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Eagles including four 3-pointers. Carrie Ojeda recorded a double-double for the Eagles with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Portland State outrebounded Eastern Washington in the game 43-to-36 but the Eagles held an eight-point advantage in the paint.
The Vikings were without starting forward
Mikaela Rivard who missed the game due to an illness. Rivard is averaging 7.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
The Vikings will finish off their four-game home stand this Thursday when they host conference newcomer the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Stott Center.
