Box Score
HILLSBORO, Ore.-
Daniela Solis didn't waste any time making an impact in her first game of the year, scoring a golden goal with three seconds remaining in the final overtime period, to give PSU (1-4-0) a 2-1 victory over Boise State (3-4-0) at the Viking Soccer Classic, held at Hillsboro Stadium, Friday afternoon. Solis, who returned from playing at the U 20 women's World Cup in Japan, gives PSU its first win of the 2012 season.
In the first half, as has been the case in most of the Viks' matches, the team came out and recorded some early chances, as Solis had a nice opportunity saved by Bronco's goalkeeper Maddy McDevitt. Later in the half, Solis again got free in front and sent a shot wide as PSU pressed for the opening marker.
It appeared that the Boise State had recorded the matches' first goal in the waning moments of the period, but fell victim to a late offsides call.
At halftime the shots were knotted up at five apiece, while the Bronco's held a decided 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
In the second stanza Portland State found the back of the net, as
Cori Bianchini worked her way down below the box, found some room within the defense and slipped a shot just inside the far post to give the Vikings 1-0 edge.
The Boise State offense found its touch late in the second half, after applying tremendous pressure to the PSU defense. Brianne Favatella connected with a header off a cross by Mackenzie Hickel. Shannon Schueren also was credit with an assist.
In total Boise State outshot the Viks 13-7 and held an advantage in corners, 10-2.
After trading chances in the first overtime the score remained 1-1. It appeared that the match was destined for a draw with the final seconds ticking down, but senior
Carlie Martin found Solis open, one-on-one, matched up with a defender. The sophomore, 15-yards out, found room on the far side of McDevitt and put it home, lifting PSU to its first win of the season, with the game clock hitting zero.
“It's big (on the victory), I don't even know at this very moment how many young players, freshmen and red shirt freshmen in this game,” said head coach
Laura Schott. “It was a big team effort and it was well deserved.”
Boise State held advantages in both shots (17-8) and corner opportunities (14-3), but PSU held the edge where it mattered most.
Not only did Solis score the game's most important marker, but she paced the Viks in shots with three, while the other goal scorer, Bianchini, wasn't far behind with two.
The Broncos Schueren led the team in shots with four while Favatella had three, including her goal in the contest.
Senior
Lainey Hulsizer trumped a tremendous performance in Seattle last weekend, making seven saves on eight shots, including several acrobatic stops towards the end of the second half to improve her record to 1-4-0. Meanwhile McDervitt made four saves on six shots and drops to 3-4-0 this season.
The Viks next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Hillsboro Stadium, for a 1 p.m. showdown with Utah State.
