Viks Offense Explodes for Four Goals as PSU Wins Dam Cup Matchup, 4-0

HILLSBORO, Ore. -   Senior Amanda Dutra led an offensive onslaught for the Portland State Vikings (5-6-1, 3-1-0) as she tallied two goals to help lift the squad to a 4-0 victory over Eastern Washington (4-6-2, 1-2-1) in the third annual installment of the Dam Cup rivalry game, in Hillsboro, Ore., Sunday afternoon. Four different players recorded points in PSU's third conference victory of the season as the team recorded the most goals it has in a single match all season.

Portland State opened up the scoring early in the first half as Dutra recorded her first goal of the season off a free kick from 10-yards out. The shot found its way past the wall of Eagle defenders and  by the goalkeeper in the 16th minute. While the Viks controlled play for much of the half, the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime. PSU outshot Eastern Washington, 6-5 at the end of the stanza, while neither team regsitered a corner kick opportunity.

In the second half the Viks exploded onto the scoresheet, tallying three goals in the final 45 minutes. The offensive assault began in  51st minute as senior Megan Martin fed Dutra a through ball and the senior from Sherwood, Ore., beat the keeper on the right side from five yards out, giving Dutra her second of the game and season.
 
Martin got in on the scoring spree in the 62nd minute as a scramble in front saw sophomore Daniela Solis feed Martin in the box as the senior forward tapped in  her second goal of the year for the 3-0, advantage.

Freshman Lynsey Gaines capped off the PSU attack in the 76th minute as she received a pass from Solis, took a shot which skipped off a Eastern Washington defender, and continued its course to the back of the net to give Gaines her first collegiate goal.

While Eastern Washington generated some late pressure, PSU secured its third conference win of the year, 4-0 over the Eagles.

The Viks outshot Eastern Washington, 12-6 in the match as Martin led Portland State in shots with four. Dutra finished the day with four points, (2g, 0a) while Martin was second on the team with three  (1g, 1a), and both Solis (0g, 2a) and Gaines (1g, 0a) finished the game with two points apeice. Eastern Washington was paced in shots by Alisha Stott with two.

Senior Lainey Hulsizer improved to 4-6-1 overall as she made one save to record her second-consecutive shutout and her third of the season in the winning effort.
 
Nathalie Schwery got the start between the pipes for the Eagles as she made one save and allowed two goals as she fell to 2-3-2 overall. Schwery was relieved of her duties in the 52nd minute as Jamie Walker was inserted into the lineup. Walker didn't fare much better however as she made two saves and also allowed two markers in the defeat.

With the victory Portland State now leads the Dam Cup series  3-0, as Volleyball tallied two points in its match against Eastern Washington earlier in the year. Portland State women's soccer is undefeated in Dam Cup rivalry matchups, 3-0, with the first match starting back in 2010.

The Viks will now prepare for its second Big Sky road swing when it travels to play Northern Arizona next Friday and Southern Utah next Sunday. Match times are slated for 6 p.m. PT and 9 a.m. PT, respectively.
 
GAME NOTES: With the win the Viks are now 12-4-1 all-time against Eastern Washington … Four goals is the highest offensive output the team has had all season … Head coach Laura Schott is now 20-6-6 in Big Sky contests since taking the reigns as head coach ... This is the first time this year that Portland State has swept its opponents during a two-game weekend.
