Daniela Solis continued her strong campaign tallying one marker and taking a shot that led to a second, as the Portland State Vikings (4-6-1, 2-1-0) blanked Montana (5-5-2, 1-1-1), 2-0, at Hillsboro Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Viks offense picked up where it left off against North Dakota controlling play early on. Solis found the back of the net in the 27th minute, taking a pass from
Kayla Henningsen and booted her third goal of the year, from 10 yards out. The Viks went into halftime with the 1-0 leading having outshot the Grizzlies, 11-7, and held an advantage in corner kick opportunities 4-2.
With the score, 1-0 in favor of PSU in the second half, the squad didn't waste any time getting an insurance marker as Solis help engineer a goal nearly five minutes into the second stanza. She took a shot from 20 yards out which then ricocheted off a Montana defender, and deflected into the top portion of the net, as the Grizzlies fell victim to an own goal. With the lead in hand, PSU continued to control play as the game ended with a 2-0 victory.
Aside form making things happen offensively Solis led the team in shots with four while senior
Amanda Dutra was second on the list with three. India Watne paced the Grizzlies in shots with three. The Viks outshot Montana by a final total of 19-9, the team's third-highest shot output of the season. Portland State also dominated in corner opportunities tallying nine to the Grizzlies two.
Senior Laniey Hulsizer recorded her second shutout of the season as fourth-year starter made two saves to improve to 4-6-1 overall. Kristen Hoon got the start in net and allowed two goals and recorded two saves as she fell to 5-5-2 for Montana. Kendra McMillen replaced Hoon in the 76th minute as she recorded one save for the Grizzlies.
Portland State will wrap up its first Big Sky homestand on Sunday when the team faces Eastern Washington the third installment of the Dam Cup. The match is slated for 1 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium. The Viks are 2-0 all-time in Damn Cup matches with the series beginning in 2010.
