PORTLAND – The Portland State women's basketball program has released its 2012-13 schedule, which is highlighted by an expanded 20-game Big Sky Conference schedule. The Vikings will play 15 home games and 13 road games before the Big Sky Conference Tournament in March.
The Vikings open their 2012-13 slate with an exhibition game against Warner Pacific College on Nov. 2. The game will tip-off at 6 p.m. PT at the Peter W. Stott Center and is the first game of a doubleheader with the Portland State men's basketball team.
Portland State will open its regular season campaign at home against George Fox University on Nov. 9, which will also be a doubleheader with the men's team.
The first road test for the Vikings will come Nov. 15 at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore. when they face the University of Oregon.
Following a Nov. 20 matchup with Corban College at the Stott Center, PSU will travel to Moraga, Calif. for the Saint Mary's Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 23-24. The Vikings will take on Chattanooga and Butler in their only non-conference tournament of the season.
Portland State and cross-town rival Portland will square off in the first of two meetings between the schools on Dec. 2 at the Stott Center. The Vikings and Pilots will also play at the Chiles Center on Dec. 29 in the Viking's final non-conference game of the season. A home game against Gonzaga (Dec. 7) and a road contest against Seattle University (Dec. 9) pave the way to an expanded Big Sky schedule.
Portland State will host 10 Big Sky Conference home games as the league has expanded to 11 full-time members. Southern Utah and North Dakota have been added for 2012-13.
"The conference is as competitive as I have ever seen it since I have been here so we will need to be tested and challenged early on,” sixth-year head coach
Sherri Murrell said.
The Vikings open conference play on the road at Idaho State (Dec. 20) and at Weber State (Dec. 22). PSU will open its home conference schedule by hosting Montana State (Jan. 3) and Montana (Jan. 5) before heading back out on the road for contests at Sacramento State (Jan. 10) and at Northern Arizona (Jan. 12). PSU will be challenged early on in the conference schedule with four of its first six conference matches coming on the road.
Portland State will then have its longest home stand of the season with four consecutive conference home games starting with Northern Colorado on Jan. 17. The Vikings will then welcome conference newcomer North Dakota on Jan. 19 hosting the first Dam Cup rivalry game on Jan. 21. The Vikings will then wrap up the four-game stand with Southern Utah on Jan. 24 concluding the first half of the conference schedule.
In the second half of the conference season, the Vikings face each of the Big Sky teams again -- switching home and away venues. This means the Vikings will end the regular season at home, against Idaho State (March 7) and Weber State (March 9).
The 2013 Big Sky Conference Women's Basketball Tournament will be played March 14-16 and hosted by the regular-season champion. The top seven teams from the regular-season standings qualify for the tournament, with the top seed earning a bye to the semifinals.
Portland State went 15-14 overall and 7-9 in the Big Sky Conference last season and missed the Big Sky Tournament for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
PSU returns nine letterwinners and four starters (
Kate Lanz,
Courtney VanBrocklin,
Karley Lampman, and
Keaton McFadden) from a year ago. They welcome transfer
Angela Misa, who redshirted last year after transferring from Oregon State. Misa, 6-foot-1 junior forward, will compete for a starting role right away. Three freshmen also grace the 2012-13 roster.
Portland State evening home games (aside from the opening two doubleheaders with the men's team) will tip off at 7:30 p.m. in 2012-13. The time change is one-half hour later than previous seasons. The move is set to accommodate fans traveling to games. City parking meters are free after 7 p.m., and many night classes at Portland State end by 7 p.m. clearing parking structures on campus.
