Portland State Women’s Soccer Comes Up Short in Big Sky Opener

Box Score
Greeley, Colo. – Despite outchancing its opponent 12-7 in the match, the Portland State women's soccer team (2-6-1, 0-1-0) couldn't solve Northern Colorado (3-4-2, 1-0-0) goalkeeper Natalie D'Adamio, as the Bears tripped up the Viks, 1-0, in Greeley, Colo., on Friday night. Senior Amanda Dutra returned to the lineup for the first time since suffering an ankle injury several weeks ago and led the team in shots with three.

As has been the case throughout much of the season, Portland State played a strong first half as the team outshot its opponent 10-5 and was even in corners, 2-2. The second half played out a bit differently for the two squads as both teams locked down defensively with only four combined shots fired in the second stanza. As regulation time drew closer to a conclusion, it was the Bears who wound up breaking through. Chandler Guetz booted a shot from the center which deflected off a PSU defender and found its way past senior goalkeeper Lainey Hulsizer in the 85th minute. Following the own goal, the Viks were unable to regroup and Northern Colorado handed the Portland State its first conference loss of the season.

“We played well but didn't finish our shots like we should have,” head coach Laura Schott said. “We played a tough opponent on a difficult road trip but we need to step up in big situations.”

PSU was bolstered by the return of seniors Amanda Dutra and Amanda Howie who both came back from injuries for the first time in this match. Dutra led the team with four shots while freshman Cori Bianchini, sophomore Daniela Solis and senior Carlie Martin all tallied two shots apiece. Essence Laneir-Ortiz paced the Bears in shots with two.

Senior Lainey Hulsizer once again got the nod in net for the Viks making three saves and allowing one goal to fall to 2-6-1, while Natalie D'Adamio made five saves to record the shoutout.

The Viks will now travel up to Grand Forks N.D., for a Sunday showdown with the University North Dakota. The match is slated to begin at 9 a.m. PT.
