Portland State Upends Nebraska-Omaha, 2-1

Box Score

BOISE, Idaho – Senior Megan Martin had a strong offensive performance in Portland State's (2-5-1) 2-1 victory over Nebraska-Omaha (0-9-0)  Sunday morning, in Boise, Idaho at the Etc./Nike Classic. The forward registered an assist on the team's first goal of the game and ended up scoring the game-winning marker late in the second half.

Portland State got on the scoreboard early in the match as sophomore Daniela Solis received a pass from Martin in the seventh minute of play and put the Viks up 1-0. That score stood up through the first half as PSU dominated the opening stanza, outshooting the Mavericks 12-6 and holding an advantage in corner kicks, 3-0.

Nebraska-Omaha was able to cash in on on an opportunity in the 57th minute as Melanie McCormick found the back of the net with Katlyn Nimtz recording an assist. The teams traded chances throughout the half but Martin broke through late in the period, taking a pass from redshirt sophomore Melissa Bishop and scored from 10 yards out giving PSU a 2-1 lead in the 77th minute. That lead would hold up as the Viks earned its second victory of the season.

PSU treated this game like a shooting gallery tallying a season-high 22 shots in the match. They out-booted Nebraska-Omaha 22-9 and had three corners to the Mavericks' one. Martin paced the Viks in shots with four, while both Solis and sophomore Kayla Henningsen had three apiece. Hannah Wampler led Nebraska-Omaha with two shots.

Senior Lainey Hulsizer got the nod in net today, making five saves, allowing one goal and improving to 2-5-1. Meaghan Clark started for the Mavericks and made nine saves and allowed two goals in the losing effort.

The game was a physical one that had several yellow cards handed out as Ali Engler and Jordyn Braun received yellow cards, and PSU's Kayla Henningsen, Hulsizer and Kelsey Henningsen were carded as well.

The Viks will open Big Sky play next weekend when they travel to Greely, Colo., and Grand Forks, N.D. to face Northern Colorado and North Dakota on Sept. 21 and 23. Match times are 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. respectively.
