Portland State Women’s Soccer Tripped up By Oregon, 1-0

HILLSBORO, Ore- For the third-straight-match Portland State (0-3-0) outshot its opponent on Sunday afternoon, firing 14 shots against Oregon (2-1-0), but was unable to capitalize on its chances, falling to the Ducks, 1-0, at Hillsboro Stadium.
 
The Viks played in a closely contested first half that saw both squads limit their opponent's offensive chances. At the end of the first stanza both teams accumulated four shots, while Oregon held the advantage in corner kicks, 3-2.
 
In the second half it was a similar story with both teams trading chances, but the Ducks were the first cash in on an opportunity, as Scout Libke launched a pass from beyond midfield to Kristen Parr who came in on senior goalkeeper, Lainey Hulsizer, and slipped a shot past the netminder for the matches' first marker.
 
With Oregon up 1-0 in the 50th minute Portland State poured on the offensive pressure. Both freshman Cori Bianchini and senior Megan Martin just failed to connect on chances late in the second stanza, blasting shots wide of the net. Despite tallying 10 shots in the second frame, Oregon was able to keep PSU off the scoreboard and tallied its second win of the season, 1-0.
 
“We are playing a challenging non-conference schedule with 11 new team members,” head coach Laura Schott said. “I am happy with our progress and look forward to the upcoming games.”
 
Bianchini paced the Vikings in shots with four, while freshman Emma Cooney tallied three in the effort. Maryn Beutler led the Ducks with three shots, one of which was on goal.
 
Senior Lainey Hulsizer got the start in net for PSU, making six saves and allowing one goal, while redshirt freshman Cailtlin Plese came in at the 68 minute mark and played the rest of the way, however wasn't tested in her 23 minutes of action.
 
Abby Steele started her third match of the year for Oregon and recorded five saves in the match.
 
The contest got a little physical midway through the second half as both teams were assessed yellow cards, as sophomore Kayla Henningsen received one in the 56th minute, while Lauren Thompson and Achijah Barry got carded in the 86th and 87th minute, respectively.
 
Portland State will take to the road next weekend when it heads to Seattle, Wash., to play the Redhawks of Seattle University on Sunday, Sept. 2. That match is slated for 1 p.m.
 
GAME NOTES: With the loss, Oregon is now 8-3-1 in all-time meetings between the two squads … This is the third-straight match that PSU has outshot its opponent. They are officially outshooting opponents 38-20 through three matches … Freshmen Torie Morris and Cori Bianchini have started all three regular season matches for PSU and now freshman Tamia Hasan earned her first career start on Sunday.
