HILLSBORO, Ore.- The Portland State women's soccer team competed in its first of two exhibition contests to be played at Hillsboro Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the team was matched against the University of Fraser Valley. The Viks participated in a full 90 minute session against the team from British Columbia.
Among the highlights from the contest were goals from senior Amanda Howie, who returned this season after a season ending injury in 2011, and red-shirt sophomore Kajsa Sporseen. Howie's goal came off a corner kick by fellow senior Amanda Dutra, as she connected on a header, while Sporseen received a pass from sophomore Melissa Bishop, sidestepped the goalkeeper, and fired a shot just inside the far goalpost.
"We played well and the coaching staff was really able to evaluate some new personnel combinations," head coach Laura Schott said. "Overall it was a good performance by our squad."
Splitting time in goal were red-shirt freshmen Caitlin Plese and Angela Haluska. In all 22 different Vikings played in the game as the team continued to evaluate its talent and gets tuned up for its regular season home opener against Saint Mary's College (Calif.) on Aug. 17.
The Vikings will next be in action on Tuesday, Aug. 14 when the team plays Trinity Western in the PSU's final exhibition match. The contest is slated for 5 p.m., at Hillsboro Stadium.
