PORTLAND – Sophomore forward
Mikaela Rivard led the way for the Vikings with 13 points as they took care of Warner Pacific in an exhibition game Friday night at the Peter W. Stott Center, 75-45.
It took Portland State a while to warm up from the floor. The Vikings were down 4-0 before
Keaton McFadden knocked down a jumper for their first bucket nearly five minutes into the game. PSU took its first lead at 9-7 on an Allison Green fast break layup assisted by
Courtney VanBrocklin. VanBrocklin finished with a team-high six assists.
The game stayed close through the first half with neither team taking more than a four-point advantage as the Vikings took a 29-27 lead to the break. The Vikings shot 30-percent from the field in the first led by Green with six points. McFadden added eight of her 10 boards in the game in the half.
Angela Misa, a junior transfer from Oceanside, Calif., made her long awaited debut with four points while bringing down nine boards. Portland State had a big night on the boards outrebounding Warner Pacific 56-to-37. McFadden led the squad with 10 while Misa and VanBrocklin both tallied nine.
Also making her PSU debut was freshman guard
Emily Easom who recorded eight points on 3-of-5 shooting including two from behind the arc. Freshman center
Aleigh Krug also made her debut with two points and four boards while freshman
Maddie Black made her debut recording a rebound.
After the Vikings built a six-point lead midway through the second half, they broke the game wide open with a 28-3 run to take a 72-42 lead.
The Vikings shot 46.9-percent in the second half and 37.5-percent for the game.
Karley Lampman recorded 11 points while knocking down a trio of three-pointers to go along with Rivard's 13 as the only other Viking in double-digits.
VanBrocklin tallied eight points and nine boards to go along with her six assists and three steals in the game.
As expected, PSU dominated in the paint, outscoring Warner Pacific 30-to-12. The Vikings also held a 22-5 advantage in points off turnovers and 12-to-2 in fast break points.
NOTES: Portland State was 8-for-27 from behind the arc … Portland State will be back at home in the Stott Center to open the regular season Friday, Nov. 9 when the Vikings take on George Fox at 6 p.m. PT. It will be the first game of a doubleheader with the Portland State men's basketball team.
