Dutra Makes History as Viks Roll Over Southern Utah, 3-0

Box Score
CEDAR CITAY, Utah – Senior Amanda Dutra etched her name in the record books on Sunday afternoon tallying two helpers and setting the new career-assists record with 15, helping to give PSU (6-6-2, 4-1-1) a 3-0 victory over Big Sky opponent Southern Utah (1-9-1, 0-5-0), in Cedar City Utah. The senior from Sherwood, Ore., surpassed Julie Forrest '04 and her total of 13.

“Dutra has had a great career and we are very happy she has earned the assist record,” head coach Laura Schott said. “That record stood for a long time and it's a great accomplishment. It was not an easy record to beat”

The Viks opened up the scoring in the match in the 24th minute as freshman Torie Morris connected on a header off a Dutra corner kick. The score remained that way headed into halftime as Portland State outshot the Thunderbirds, 12-4 through the first stanza and held the advantage in corner kicks, 2-1.

The Vikings came out firing in the second half as well as freshman Cori Bianchini made it 2-0, scoring off a pass from senior Megan Martin. Freshman Lynsey Gaines registered her second goal of the year to give PSU a 3-0 lead, lofting a shot over the keeper in the 59th minute. Dutra once again was credited with an assist.  With that final marker, the Viks cruised to a 3-0 victory making it four-straight shutouts for Portland State.

“The team played well to round out a tough road trip,” Schott said. “We played well on both sides of the ball and it was a big day for our freshmen with all three goals coming from the class of 2016.”

In all the Viks tallied 21 shots as compared to Southern Utah's 11. They also edged the Thunderbirds in corner kicks, 3-1.

Gaines and Martin paced the Viking attack with four shots apiece meanwhile Stacey Brinkman fired for the Thunderbirds, good for the team lead.

Senior goalkeeper Lainey Hulsizer made four saves in the match as she recorded her fourth shutout and improved to 6-6-1 overall. Sophomore Catilin Plese also saw some some action making four saves of her own. Charly Booth started for Southern Utah and made seven saves allowing three goals.

The Viks will now head home for its second Big Sky homestand as the team will face Idaho State next Friday, Oct. 12 and Weber State on Sunday, Oct. 14.
