BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Portland State (9-7-2, 6-2-1) ended the 2012 regular season on a high note Wednesday night, as the Viks downed CSU Bakersfield (5-10-2), 2-0, in Bakersfield, Calif. Both senior captains,
Amanda Howie and
Amanda Dutra recorded goals to help give Portland State its fourth-consecutive winning record in the regular season.
PSU struck early in the contest and got production from a familiar face as Howie cashed in on a cross from sophomore
Melissa Bishop in the 16th minute. Her goal in the contest marks the fourth-consecutive match in which the Tigard, Ore., native has tallied a marker.
The Viks took that 1-0 lead to halftime as they dominated the Roadrunners in shots, 9-1 through the first frame. PSU also held the advantage in corner kick opportunities, 6-1.
Portland State kept the pressure going in the second stanza as Dutra tallied her third goal of the year, netting a marker in the 69th minute from 20 yards out, putting the Vikings up 2-0. Sophomore
Eryn Brown was credited with an assist on the goal.
CSU Bakersfield was able to get some pressure on the Viks in the final frame but it wasn't enough as PSU held on for the 2-0 victory and wrapped up its 2012 regular season.
"We played well and we did a good job of managing the matches' ups and downs which is important heading into the tournament," head coach
Laura Schott said. "Bakersfield is a team with talent that exceeds their current record so we are very happy to have earned the win."
The Viks outshot the Roadrunners, 16-6 overall marking the 11th time this season that PSU has recorded a shot output of 15 or more. Portland State also held an advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.
Dutra paced the Viks in shots with five while four other PSU players tallied two apiece. The Roadrunners' Emily Noethe led her team in shots with two.
Hulsizer wraps up the best statistical season of her career, going 9-7-2 in the campagin as she made four saves to record her sixth shutout of the season. Meanwhile Tori Ornela made eight saves, allowing two goals in the loss, falling to 4-9-2 overall.
The Viks now turn their attention to the Big Sky tournament which will be held in Pocatello, Idaho from Nov. 2-4. Portland State enters the postseason in a three-way tie for the regular season title, holds the No. 2 seed and will play defending conference champion, Montana in the first round. Meanwhile host, Idaho State and Weber State will play in the second match.
