Seven PSU seniors were honored before the match as senior Amanda Howie gave them something to celebrate about scoring in the 82nd minute to seal the 1-0 victory.

Howie Proves to Be Senior-Day Hero as Viks Down Wildcats, 1-0

Box Score HILLSBORO, Ore.- After firing nearly 13 shots at the Weber State goalkeeper throughout the match, senior Amanda Howie launched a rocket past Ryann Waldman in the 82nd minute to give Portland State (7-7-2, 5-2-1)  a 1-0 victory over Weber State (6-10-0, 4-3-0), In Hillsboro Stadium, Sunday afternoon. Howie tallied her third goal of the season as the midfielder from Tigard, Ore., was one of seven seniors to be honored for their accomplishments at the beginning of the match.

The Viks opened up with plenty of energy and fire as senior Megan Martin had several opportunities early to give the Viks its first goal but misfired on both chances. Both teams played a physical brand of soccer which led to yellow cards to Mackenzie Harrison, senior Amanda Dutra and freshman Cori Bianchini all in the first half.
 
While Portland State held control for a majority of the first period, the tides began to turn around the 35 minute mark as the Wildcats started to pour on some pressure and test senior goalkeeper Lainey Hulsizer.
 
While both teams created offense, neither were able to find the back of the net as the match was scoreless at halftime. The Viks outshot Weber State 9-7 through the first frame while the Wildcats had three corner kick chances to PSU's 2.
 
The second half was much of the same for both squads as the teams traded chances. A turning point in the half came in the 57th minute when Harrision was tagged with her second yellow card which is an automatic red card and ejection from the match. Portland State seized control and poured on the offensive pressure as Martin, Bianchini and sophomore Kayla Henningsen all came close to putting PSU up 1-0.
 
As the half drew to a close Howie corralled a loose ball from 35 yards out and fired a bullet past goalkeeper Ryann Waldman to put PSU up 1-0 in the 83rd minute. The Wildcats created some late chances but it wasn't enough as the Viks downed Weber State, 1-0 to improve to 5-2-1 in the Big Sky
 
While the shots were close at the end of the first half the same couldn't be said at the end of the second as Portland State held a decided 11-2 advantage in the final stanza leading to a 20-9 total at the end of 90 minutes. The Viks edged Weber State in corner kicks, 5-4.

Henningsen paced the Viks in shots with four while Martin and Bianchini had three apiece. Chansi Crompton led the Wildcats in shots with 3 while Abbey Kennedy and Stacy Bair each had two.
 
Hulsizer had a strong senior day in her own right getting the start in net and making five saves to help secure her fifth shutout of 2012. Waldman made the start in net for Weber State as she mad seven saves and allowed one goal to fall to 6-9-0.
 
Portland State will have one last home Big Sky contest next Friday when they host Sacramento State at Hillsboro Stadium. Match time is slated for 1 p.m. 

GAME NOTES: This match marks the eighth time this season that the Viks have tallied 20 or more shots in a match ... Senior Amanda Howie's game winning goal now puts her in the team lead with three ... Head coach Lauara Schott is now 22-7-7 in Big Sky contests in her career.
