Idaho State Upends Women’s Soccer, 2-1

Box Score
HILLSBORO, Ore. – Despite a late goal by senior Amanda Howie which cut the Idaho State lead in half, 1-2, the Portland State women's soccer team (6-7-1, 4-2-1) was unable to come up victorious against the Bengals (8-5-1, 3-2-1).

In the first half Portland State controlled much of the play early on tallying several good offensive chances as freshman Tamia Hasan came close to scoring her first of the season while sophomore Daniela Solis almost put PSU up, 1-0. \

As the first half drew to a close the Bengals were awarded a late corner kick in the stanza's final seconds. Vanessa Cabilan found Mikaela Carrillo in the box who connected with two second left in the half to give Idaho State a 1-0 lead.

Despite the late goal the Vikings outshot the Bengals 10-2 and held the advantage in corner kicks with 3-1. The ISU goal was the first one that Portland State had allowed since the 21st minute in the North Dakota match in late Sept., snapping a scoreless streak of 497 minutes.

While the Viks' senior Amanda Howie had two close offensive chances in the second half, Idaho State upped its lead to two, as Katie Flynn found Kiley Godfrey on a cross as the forward cashed in, in the box.

The Viks pressed hard on offense as the period wore on as  Howie headed in her second goal of the season off a corner kick from senior Amanda Dutra. Dutra increased her program-best assist total to 16 on the goal. While the Viks maintained pressure throughout the rest of the match the Bengals were able to weather the storm and hand the Viks their second conference loss of the season, 1-2.

”It was a tough one today but I'd like to give credit to Idaho State, they played well and finished the chances they created,” head coach Laura Schott said. “Our remaining games will be a similar test as everyone is playing to host the tournament and to secure a postseason birth. I expect our next opponents, Weber State and Sacramento State will be very motivated and I believe our team will be as well.”

The Viks outshot Idaho State by the widest margin of the season as the team tallied 20 shots to the Bengals' four. PSU also had eight corner kick opportunities while Idaho State had three.

Howie not only chipped in the only goal of the match for PSU but led the team in total shots with eight, a season-high for the Tigard, Ore., native. Dutra had the next highest total with three. The Bengals only managed four shots but made them count as offensive threat Rachel Strawn was held off the scoresheet but still tallied a team-leading two shots in the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Lainey Hulsizer made one save and allowed two goals in the losing effort as she dropped to 6-7-1 on the season. Meanwhile Bengals' goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic improved to 5-3-1 as she made five saves and allowed one marker in 90 minutes of play.

Portland State now turns its attention to Sunday when it has a 1 p.m. showdown with Weber State at Hillsboro Stadium. Before the match PSU will honor the class of 2012 with a senior day ceremony.
