RENO, Nev. – Melissa Trammel and
Kayla Henningsen each scored as the Vikings took down Detroit by a score of 2-0 for their fourth straight victory to win the Wolf Pack Invitational Sunday morning in Reno, Nev.
“I am very happy with how the team performed this weekend,” Vikings' head coach
Laura Schott said following the match. “We executed well on both ends of the field and score some outstanding goals.”
Trammell got the Vikings on the board early with her third goal of the year in the 16th minute of the match.
Ariana Cooley started the attack with a pass into the box to
Megan Martin who then one touched the ball to Trammell who knocked it home to give the Vikings the 1-0 lead.
Portland State (4-2-0 overall) took the 1-0 lead into the half. This season Portland State has scored 10 total goals with six coming in the first half of play.
Despite having the 1-0 lead the match was particularly close. Each team compiled only three shots apiece going into the half.
Detroit (4-2-1) had chances to score in the game, albeit not many. Portland State junior transfer keeper
Melissa Ferguson was again brilliant in goal for the Vikings. She recorded four saves in the match and improved her record to 4-0 this season with her third shutout, second straight.
Henningsen put the match out of reach when she advanced the ball up field and took a shot from 37-yards out that went off the crossbar and in for her second goal of the season.
The Vikings have now scored two goals in four of their first six games this season including their last three.
The Vikings return home to host the Viking Soccer Classic next Friday and Sunday at Hillsboro Stadium. They will face off with Boise State Friday night at 6 p.m. and Seattle University on Sunday at 2 p.m.
