SACRAMENTO, Calif.
– Junior forward Megan Martin followed two first half goals with the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute to complete her first career hat-trick and give the Vikings (5-6 overall, 1-0 Big Sky) a 3-2 victory over the Hornets of Sacramento State (4-7, 0-1) Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.

“It was a great conference road win,” Vikings' head coach Laura Schott said following the match. “Sacramento State is always a tough opponent and they were again today. I'm happy with the way out team responded to Sacramento State's two second half goals. It showed some toughness to grind it out on the road like that. ”

Momentum dominated the match Friday with Megan Martin scoring two goals just minutes apart (25th minute, 28th minute) to give the Vikings a 2-0 halftime lead.

Megan Martin took a pass from twin sister Carlie Martin and then dribbled past a defender and blasted a shot to the far post for her first goal of the game and her second of the season. Amanda Dutra then found Megan Martin on a bouncing pass through the box where Martin then took it and scored on the near post.

The Vikings had all the momentum going into the half with a 2-0 lead but Sacramento State came out aggressively in the early minutes of the second half and scored twice within a four minute span to tie the game at 2-2 in the 51st minute.

Just over a minute later, Megan Martin completed her hat-trick when she beat a defender one-on-one and took a long shot to the far post to give the Vikings the 3-2 lead and reclaiming the momentum.

Megan Martin was outstanding today,” Schott said. “She scored some very classy goals.”

Lainey Hulsizer recorded her first win of the season by playing all 90 minutes in goal for the Vikings and record 14 saves. Her 14 saves is tied for the 10th most in a single game in Portland State history.

Megan Martin's hat-trick is the seventh in program history and the first since Jamie Blakesley achieved the feat at UC Riverside in 2003. Martin ended the match with four shots, all on goal, and the three goals.

The Vikings were severely out-shot in the match by a mark of 20-to-7 but they made the most of their opportunities. Three other Vikings recorded one shot each to go along with Megan Martin's four shots.

The win Friday marks the 29th career win as head coach for Schott, tying her with Bernie Fagan (1993-96) and Tara Erickson (2001-2004) for the most wins all-time at Portland State.

Both Portland State and Sacramento State came into the match tied atop the Big Sky at 4-6 going into conference play. The last time the two teams met prior to Friday's Portland State victory was a Sacramento State, 2-1 victory last season in the Big Sky Conference Tournament which ended the Vikings' season.

The Vikings  will head back out on the road for conference games at Eastern Washington on Oct. 7 and at Montana on Oct. 9.
