PORTLAND, Ore.
– The Portland State women's soccer team fell Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1 in a tough fought battle with Seattle University at Hillsboro Stadium.

It was a tough but evenly fought match until the final minute of the first half. The Redhawks (5-3-0 overall) had the ball and were on the attack when they were fouled in the Portland State goalkeeper box and was awarded a controversial penalty kick.

In the aftermath of the foul call and the awarding of the penalty kick, Carlie Martin was received a yellow card as did Vikings' head coach Laura Schott. Schott was then given another yellow card and disqualified from the rest of the game.

When the dust settled, Seattle scored on the penalty kick to take the 1-0 lead with 17 seconds left in the first half.

The Vikings (4-4-0) came out in the second half with a renewed intensity after losing the lead and their coach, for the game, at the end of the first half.

Portland State forced three corner kicks and six shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half and made the sixth shot count. Amanda Dutra found Teal Sigler who recorded her first career goal for the Vikings to equalize the match in the 60th minute.

“The players responded very well to a lot of adversity today,” Schott said following the match. “We competed really well today. We had a lot of momentum and were playing really well and they got a free one. That's kind of a momentum killer but we responded well afterwards.”

Following the Vikings' goal to tie the match at 1-1, the intensity and physicality of the match increased. There were 11 total fouls in the second half, eight by Seattle, with several that were not called.

Seattle got the final chance it needed in the 72nd minute to take the final 2-1 advantage.

The Vikings now head to the Bay Area to take on San Francisco Friday, Sept. 16 and San Jose Sunday, Sept. 18.
