HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team took the lead early and held on late to defeat Idaho by a score of 2-1 Sunday afternoon in front of a season-high crowd of 537 at Hillsboro Stadium.
Melissa Trammell scored her second goal of the season in the 10th minute of Sunday's match.
Esty Geiger drove the ball deep into the Vandal's 18-yard box where Trammell headed it in to give the Vikings the early 1-0 advantage.
“When we put pressure on the ball on defense we play a lot better,” Portland State head coach
Laura Schott said following Sunday's win. “I think when we came out and did that it set a tone for us. It was a really competitive game.”
After only managing two shots in the first half of Friday's match against UNLV, The Vikings were clicking on all cylinders right from the opening whistle.
Portland State (2-2-0 overall) recorded nine shots in the first half Sunday as opposed to just three by Idaho (0-2-2). The Vikings outshot the Vandals by a final total of 14-7 in the match.
Even with only three shots in the first half, the Vandals managed to even up the match in the 34th minute. Chelsea Small was able to get a shot off in traffic and find the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
It did not take long for the Vikings to respond. They came out less than three four minutes later when
Amanda Dutra recorded her first goal of the season via the header to give the Vikings the 2-1 lead which they took to the half.
The Vandals had chances to tie the game in the second half with three shots on goal but Vikings keeper
Melissa Ferguson recorded three saves in the second half and improved her record at Portland State to 2-0 with the win Sunday.
“Responding to the goal that Idaho scored today was a big step for us,” Schott said. “Our win on Friday was against a good team but obviously when we went up they didn't have a chance to come back. Holding a lead for that long was important for us and was a good step.”
After losing their first two games of the season in Utah, the Vikings evened their record at 2-2 this weekend before heading to Reno, Nev. next weekend where they will take on Nevada and Detroit as part of the Wolf Pack Invitational.
