Golden Goal Gives Vikings Win in 107th Minute

HILLSBORO, Ore. – Freshman Kayla Henningsen's golden goal in the 107th minute gave the Vikings their first win of the season Friday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium.

After a hand ball foul by a UNLV player outside the 18-yard box, Amanda Dutra set up for a free kick inside of four minutes left in the second overtime period. Dutra fired the ball into the crowd and found Henningsen who knocked the ball past the UNLV keeper for the golden goal.

“That was a gut-it-out kind of game,” Vikings head coach Laura Schott said following the double-overtime match. “I'm really proud of the team and how they stepped out from the first whistle and how they got it done in overtime. I'm really happy for everyone.”

The Rebels (1-2-0 overall) seemed to have control offensively in the first half out-shooting the Vikings (1-2-0) by a total of 4-2 in the first half. The Vikings only two shots came in the final six minutes of the half.

The second half was a different story. The Vikings recorded eight shots in the second half, four of which were on goal. The match moved back and forth as the game wore on and the players got more and more tired in the hot sun.

Even though both teams recorded good shot attempts in the second half, the match remained scoreless as the teams headed to the first 10 minute overtime period.

The Rebels had three shot attempts in the first overtime period, one on goal, but junior transfer Melissa Ferguson recorded the save, her sixth of the day.

Ferguson, getting her first start as a Viking, pitched a shutout with six saves and played all 106:28 in goal and recorded her first win.

As the first overtime period ended and the second began, the intensity on the field and the Vikings' bench intensified to the point where no one was sitting.

“Moral wise, a win like this is a big lift,” Schott said. “Anytime you finish a goal with 3:32 left in the second overtime it's a big lift.

With under four minutes remaining in the match, Dutra connected with Henningsen for the game winner.

Henningsen was one of Vikings to play every second of the match and recorded two shots including the golden goal.

The Vikings will be back on the pitch at Hillsboro Stadium on Sunday when they take on the Vandals of Idaho in a 1 p.m. match.
