Former Washington State guard Dre Winston will transfer to Portland State for the 2011-12 academic year and join the Viking Basketball Program. Winston, who is an aid agreement signee, will redshirt the season as per NCAA transfer rules. He will be sophomore eligible beginning in 2012-13.
The addition of Winston comletes the Portland State roster for the 2011-12 season. It also, notes Viking Coach
Tyler Geving, gets PSU to 13 full scholarships, nine of which are going to players from the Pacific Northwest.
"One of our goals is to recruit the northwest area well," said Geving. "With the addition of Dre that gives us nine of 13 scholarships from the area and we are proud of that."
Winston, who played backup point guard as a freshman at Washington State, will have three years at the point for the Vikings. Geving expects those to be good years.
"Dre is an extremely quick, athletic guard. In fact, with he and (freshman signee) Gary Winston (no relation), we have two of the top athletic guards from that class ('10) in Washington. They are two guys we are really excited about for the future."
Dre Winston averaged 20.8 points and 3.6 assists as a senior at Lakes (WA) High School. He led the team to a third place finish at the 3A State Championship, earning Most Valuable Player honors. Winston also was named MVP of the Northwest Shootout, scoring 24 points as the Washington All-Stars beat the Oregon All-Stars, 116-109.
Winston saw limited action at Washington State in 2010-11, scoring 15 points with 14 rebounds and eight assists in 26 games.
Winston joins four returning letterwinners, three returning redshirts, and six other signees.
