VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Portland State women's tennis team made history today in its final match of the season, winning its third Big Sky match of 2011 with a 5-2 triumph over Idaho State. The three conference wins are the most by any Viking team. Portland State achieved two Big Sky wins in 2008.

"I'm very proud of the girls," said Head Coach Jay Sterling, "It was awesome to win the match and have the kind of season we had this year after last season."

The Vikings finished 2011 with an overall record 6-12, the most wins since 2008, and a 3-5 Big Sky record. Portland State is guaranteed to finish at least sixth in the conference after the win today.

PSU did not hesitate in doubles, closing them out in 40 minutes with No. 1, Yuki Sugiyama and Anya Dalkin, and No. 3, Caitlin Stocking and Marti Pellicano, doing the honors in convincing fashion. The one's took the match 8-1 and the three's did so with an 8-2 score to claim the doubles point.

The Vikings continued that dominance in singles with Pellicano taking her match at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0, and Stocking taking the No. 5 contest, 6-1, 6-0. Sugiyama won her match at No. 1, her 13th win of the season, with a 6-1, 6-4 score.

Sugiyama finishes the season with a 13-4 record in singles and an 11-7 record in doubles, both at No. 1. The win total is the most by any Viking since 2003, when Lisa Bessman won 14 matches in singles, seven each at No. 3 and 4.

Until today, no Viking had ever won more than 12 matches at No. 1. Leinani McAneney won 12 at No. 1 in 1998, en route to earning first team All-Big Sky honors. Sugiyama also won the most matches in the Big Sky this season at No. 1.
