PORTLAND, Ore. - Swinging hot racquets after a Big Sky Conference win over Eastern Washington, the Portland State women's tennis team is looking to close its season with a victory over Idaho State April 20 at Club Green Meadows. The match will begin at 8 a.m., with senior day activities beginning approximately 10 minutes before the match.
Head Coach
Jay Sterling will honor the four seniors on this year's squad, two of which were members of the inaugural women's tennis team in 2008. Four-year members
Anya Dalkin and
Caitlin Stocking, along with transfers
Masha Los and
Yuki Sugiyama will be honored before the match for their contributions to the program.
The program will attempt to match its highest win total since 2008 against the Bengals at six wins and will also attempt to win its third Big Sky match, also a would-be program best.
Before the win over the Eagles, the Vikings took on No. 48 Sacramento State, the Hornets final conference match of the season. Though Sac State would go on to claim a 7-0 win, the Viks did not walk away empty handed as Dalkin and Sugiyama at No. 1 doubles defeated No. 87 Tatsiana Kapshai and Rebeca Delgado, 9-7 (7-4).
The following day in Cheney, Wash., Portland State would play one of its longest matches of the season at roughly five and a half hours. PSU opened the competition with a near sweep in doubles, taking Nos. 1 and 3, and dropping No. 2 8-7 (7-4).
Singles were great sight to see for Portland State as
Marti Pellicano and Sugiyama marched to two-set victories. Dalkin would clinch the match for PSU at No. 2 with one of the biggest wins of her career. After losing the first set 6-0, the Tuscon, Ariz., native won the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 to claim victory.
Nayanatara Vadali won in a similar fashion, winning the first set 6-3, but losing the second 7-5. After opening to a 5-1 deficit in the third set, Vadali rallied back to claim the set and the match 7-6 (7-5).
The Vikings will continue to chase history this weekend, with Sugiyama leading the way. Should she win Wednesday morning, Sugiyama would finish with one of the highest-single season win totals in school history at 13. Lisa Bessman has one of the highest known win totals in school history at 14, recorded in 2003. Coincidentally, when Portland State dissolved the tennis program in 2003, Bessman transferred to Idaho State.
Idaho State will enter the contest at 3-11 overall and 0-7 in Big Sky contests. The Bengals broke its Big Sky winless drought against the Vikings last year with the 6-1 victory and gave themselves their second win of the season.
At No. 3 this season Laura Porras leads the team in victories with eight, three in Big Sky play, after transfering from Tennessee Tech. Katherina Marsela owns a 5-9 record overall this season at No. 1 and is 2-5 against Big Sky competition.
