PORTLAND, Ore. –
Karley Lampman tied her career high with 18 points and
Kate Lanz registered yet another double-double as Portland State won easily over visiting Corban, 90-48, on Wednesday night at the Stott Center.
Lampman made eight of her nine field goal attempts and scored 14 first-half points to pace the Vikings' offense. Lanz finished with 15 points and 10 boards for her third straight double-double and fourth on the year.
The Vikings improved to 8-4 with their third consecutive victory and sixth in the past seven games.
Portland State got off to a slow start, missing their first five shots and trailing 4-0 less than two minutes in. Back-to-back baskets from
Kate Lanz and another from
Karley Lampman put the Vikings up by two, before a Katie Steigleman jumper for the Warriors tied the game.
Moments later, the Vikings
Eryn Jones made a layup and was fouled, but was hurt on the play and had to leave the game. After
Lariel Powell subbed in and converted the free throw, Portland State led 9-6 and never trailed the rest of the way.
A 15-4 run fueled by eight points from Lampman gave PSU a 24-10 advantage at the 10:20 mark of the first half. The Vikings led by as many as 23 points before settling for a 44-23 lead at the break.
Courtney VanBrocklin led Portland State in the second half, scoring 14 of her 16 points.
Powell, with 10 points, and
Allison Greene, with 11, both had career highs for the Vikings, who open Big Sky Conference action on Saturday against Montana State at home. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
The Vikings shot 60 percent in the second period and 46.1 percent on the night. They held the Warriors to just 31.3 percent from the floor.
"Our focus coming out tonight was to execute our offense and really carry over the defensive effort we had in Hawaii," said Lampman. "Coach (Murrell) thought we played good defense over there and we want to continue doing that every game."
NOTES: This was the second all-time meeting between PSU and Corban. Last year, the Vikings won 96-55 in Portland ... Corban, an NAIA university in Salem, counted the game as an exhibition, their fifth against NCAA DI competition this year. Their record stays at 8-4 ... the Vikings went 14 of 15 at the line and are shooting 88.8% (95-107) over the past six games ... PSU outrebounded Corban, 52-36 ... the Vikings had five players in double-figures for the first time this season ... Steigleman, Corban's all-time leading scorer, left with a possible season-ending knee injury midway through the first half ... Tess Bennett led the Warriors with 10 points. Tara Vanweerduizen added eight points, nine boards and four blocks.
