OGDEN, Utah -- Portland State had its chances late, but eventually was done in by poor rebounding and several missed close shots in the final minute in a 65-62 loss at Weber State on Thursday night.
The Vikings held a 62-61 lead with 1:10 to go, but missed two layups in the final 24 seconds that would have given them the lead. The loss dropped them to 8-9, 1-3 in the Big Sky.
Weber State dominated the boards, pulling down 49 and limiting PSU to only 31. Mikell Woodfield had 16 rebounds and Caitlin Anderson had 14 of her own for the Wildcats, who improved to 5-11, 1-3 Big Sky.
The early going was a back-and-forth affair, but when
Kelly Marchant made a pair of free throws at the 7:19 mark of the first half, the Vikings went in front 21-20. Moments later
Kelli Valentine found
Stephanie Egwuatu down low for an easy basket, before
Courtney VanBrocklin tipped in an
Eryn Jones' missed shot and PSU was up 25-21.
Egwuatu later paid back Valentine, finding the senior forward underneath the hoop for a layin, making it 27-23. Marchant gave the Vikings their largest lead of the half, 29-23, after hitting two more at the charity stripe and PSU eventually led 31-27 at the break.
Jones led PSU with 20 points and a career-high seven rebounds, while VanBrocklin and Valentine had 19 and 10 points, respectively.
Anderson and Woodfield both had double-doubles for the Wildcats, with the former scoring 23 points and the latter adding 11. Woodfield pulled down 11 of her 16 rebounds in the first half.
NOTES: PSU forced Weber State into 22 turnovers ... the Vikings shot 80 percent (16 of 20) at the free-throw line ... VanBrocklin had five steals and has 10 over the past three games ...
