SPOKANE, Wash. - In her return to the pitch, senior goalkeeper
Rachel Jarvis made seven saves for Portland State against Gonzaga. The Vikings were unable to find the back of the net against the Bulldogs and fell, 1-0, to the WCC foe.
Gonzaga struck in the 23rd minute of the match off a goal by Cassie Geerdts. Morgan Manchester, on a throw-in, dished the ball to Catherine Cullen on the right side of the goal and Geerdts put it away for the the 1-0 lead.
In the first half, Jarvis made three saves. The Lake Oswego, Ore., native missed the Vikings last match at San Diego and the second half at UC Riverside after a Highlander forward ran into Jarvis at full speed while the keeper slid to collect a loose ball in the first half.
The Vikings put two shots on target in the first half, one from
Kala Renard and the other from
Jenna Horton.
In the second half, sophomore
Amanda Dutra fired a shot in the 55th minute that was blocked by the Bulldogs defense as the bail trailed out of bounds at the end line to give the Vikings a corner kick. Shortly after the corner kick, senior
Frankie Ross fired a shot on goal that was nabbed by Gonzaga goalkeeper Lauren Ames for her third and final save of the match.
The waning minutes of the match appeared to resemble a game of cat-and-mouse as the Zags drew the Viks offsides twice in the last 13 minutes of play in their attempt to equalize the score. PSU took five shots in the second half.
