SAN DIEGO, Calif. – What started out as a lack of offensive presence in the first half for the Portland State soccer team, ended with redemption in the second this afternoon as the Vikings lost to San Diego, 5-1.
For the first time in over two years, the Vikings were unable to record a shot in the first half and were bested 10-0 by the Toreros. The last time Portland State did not record a shot in the first half was Aug. 30, 2008, when the Vikings met then-No. 1 USC, who were fresh off a 2007 national championship.
USD's four first half goals were the most allowed by the Portland State defense since Aug. 28, 2009 against Pacific (Calif.). The Tigers scored five goals in the second half of the contest, after a 0-0 tie at the half.
San Diego's Stephanie Ochs led the match in scoring with three goals and an assist. She recorded her hat-trick in the 61st minute to put the Toreros up, 5-0.
Portland State broke San Diego's clean sheet in the 73rd minute following a San Diego foul. The center official awarded the Vikings a penalty kick and junior Amanda Howie converted for the Vikings and post their only score of the afternoon.
Viking Lainey Hulsizer (2-1-0) earned her second start of the season in net and recorded seven saves.
The Vikings record now stands at 4-4-0 and will return to action next Sunday at Gonzaga. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
