No. 21 Oregon State Defeats Portland State, 1-0

CORVALLIS, Ore.
– The Portland State women's soccer team came into tonight's match with No. 21 Oregon State hoping to make history and earn its first victory against a ranked opponent. While the Vikings had their fair share of chances, they were unable to convert and fell 1-0 to the Beavers.

Oregon State took the first shot of the match when Cortney Wetzel received a pass in the box and tapped it towards the net. Senior Rachel Jarvis was able to stop the shot on the slide with her body.

In the 15th minute, the Beavers committed a foul that allowed PSU to take a free kick about 20 yards out from the goal. Tish Wise took the kick and fired a ball that sailed just right of the post.

Five minutes later the Vikings offense worked the ball into the Beavers zone. Kimmie Tammen worked a ball to Melissa Trammell just outside the box. The OSU defense closed on Trammell who slid the ball back to Amanda Dutra, who rifled a shot just off the crossbar, and setup the Viks for a subsequent corner kick opportunity.

Later in the match, Britney Allen crossed a ball on a rope to Frankie Ross three yards away from the net, but, the ball soared just high of the Oakland, Calif., native's head.

Oregon State scored in the 30th minute to go up 1-0 on a goal by Melinda Ingalls. The Beavers led the Vikings in shots on goal, 4-0, at the end of the half.

Tammen put the first shot on goal in the 50th minute. For the first 22 minutes of the second half, both teams played to a defensive stalemate, with Oregon State maintaining posession of the ball just past the midfield.

Tammen continued to pressure the Beaver defense with shots and Hannah Kimsey nearly bended a ball on a corner kick into the net. Oregon State goalkeeper Colleen Boyd punched the ball away to give the Viks another corner kick.

The Viks fall to 2-3-0 overall and will return to action Sunday against Western Oregon. Kickoff is set for noon at Hillsboro Stadium.
