LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Portland State women's soccer program won its second consecutive match this afternoon by defeating Albany at the Las Vegas Invitational, 3-0. The win marks the first time the Vikings have bounced back to .500 after dropping the first two matches of the season.
It did not take long for the Viks to break the seal against the Great Danes, with freshman
Hannah Kimsey doing the honors. In the seventh minute, the Vancouver, Wash., native dribbled the ball into the box and shot it to the left post after receiving a pass from sophomore
Amanda Dutra.
It was the only goal of the half, giving PSU a 1-0 advantage heading into the locker room. Portland State outshot Albany 7-2 in the frame and put five shots on the Great Dane goal.
In the second half, Albany would not lie down for the Vikings and began to advance the ball in its offensive zone. Albany outshot PSU, 8-7, but only put one shot on goal. Still, the Great Danes trailed the Vikings in the second stanza.
In the 85th minute of play, junior
Melissa Trammell would score the Portland State insurance goal with a chip shot that sailed over the goalkeepers head and into the back of the net.
Shortly after Trammell's goal, senior
Frankie Ross, the 2008 Big Sky Golden Boot Winner, went for the jugular. With the Great Dane keeper out of position, Ross fired a long shot that increased the Vikings lead 3-0 with 1:05 left in the contest.
Portland State will have a bye next weekend and will return to action Sept. 10 with a match at Oregon State and Sept. 12 against Western Oregon at Hillsboro Stadium.
Admission to the match at Hillsboro is free.
