PORTLAND, Ore. – Visiting Georgia Tech led the entire game and used its height advantage to power past Portland State, 69-53, at the Stott Center on Tuesday night.
Portland State (5-6) kept up with the Yellow Jackets' fast-paced tempo throughout the early minutes of the game, but couldn't get their shots to fall.The Vikings spotted Georgia Tech the first nine points of the contest and didn't get on the scoreboard until
Eryn Jones knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing at the 14:48 mark.
Every time the Vikings tried to mount a rally, the Yellow Jackets would answer right back, and it was usually with the shooting of Tacoma, Wash., native Alex Montgomery. The 6-foot-1 guard hit four 3-pointers on her way to 12 first half points, and Georgia Tech held a 41-27 lead at the break.
PSU took the momentum coming out of halftime and after Jones made 1 of 2 at the free-throw line the Vikings were down 45-32. Georgia Tech responded, though, with a 8-2 run to go up by 19.
Montgomery sat out much of the second half with cramping in both legs, but the Yellow Jackets didn't need her.
Even though the Vikings lost by 16, they played the Yellow Jackets much closer in the second half, getting outscored by just two, 28-26. After allowing Georgia Tech to shoot a hair over 60 percent in the opening period, PSU forced 14 second half turnovers and held them to 38.1 percent shooting.
Jones paced PSU with a career-best 22 points and
Courtney VanBrocklin added 10 more.
Montgomery finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for Georgia Tech, which improved to 8-4.
Portland State has lost three straight and will look to get back on track when they host cross-town rival Portland next Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Lexi Bishop tied her career-high in steals for the second straight game with three ... Jones shot 7 of 11 from the floor, including 3 of 6 from behind the arc ... Georgia Tech outrebounded PSU 44-29 ... this was the first ever meeting between the two schools and the first time Portland State had faced a team from the ACC.
