Vikings Offense Spreads the Floor in 102-98 Win Over Lamar

Box Score

DALLAS, Texas - Chris Harriel led the Vikings scorers with a career-high 23 points to the lead Portland State over Lamar 102-98 at the SMU Classic. The game is the third-highest scoring contest for the Viks since they joined the Big Sky in 1996. Five PSU players, four starters, scored 10 or more points.

The Vikings last surpassed the century mark in a 108-56 win at Montana March 1, 2008, the same season Portland State advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Lamar entered the contest 2-0.

PSU quickly trailed the Cardinals in the contest, 11-4, but began to mount a comeback led by junior forward Chehales Tapscott, who quickly closed the gap with a layup and two points at the charity stripe to close the gap to three, 11-8. Portland State would go on to build an 11 point lead at the end of the first half, 59-48

Tapscott, who transferred from Clackamas Community College, also recorded his first double-double as a Viking with 19 points and 13 rebounds. He filled the stat sheet with four assists and a steal.

Nine of Harriel's 23 points came from the free throw line and the Vikings finished 28-of-37 (.757) at the line. Harriel also added seven rebounds in 35 minutes of play.

Charles Odum, a transfer from College of Southern Idaho, for the second-straight contest scored in double figures, 13, from the bench and contributed five assists and four rebounds.

The Vikings and the Cardinals have had a high-scoring history as they met each other twice in 1980, both victories for Lamar that also included a 141-84 run-and-gun win for the Cardinals.

The win improves Portland State's record to 2-1 and will attempt its third win of the season against UC Riverside to close the SMU Classic. The two teams, meeting for the first time ever, will tip-off at 2:30 p.m.
