Ross Lifts Vikings on Senior Day to 1-0 Win Over Sac State

HILLSBORO, Ore.
- It was only fitting that the Vikings most-decorated seniors solidified PSU's final regular-season match over Sacramento State. Seniors Frankie Ross scored the match's golden-goal and Rachel Jarvis made 10 saves in net to ensure the Viks victory at Hillsboro Stadium, 1-0. PSU will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Ross, playing a limited role in today's match due to a high yellow card count, did not hesitate in her limited time to score. In the fifth minute, Ross collected a pass from Amanda Dutra in the middle of the field and broke away from the defense for a one-on-one situation with the keeper. She put the ball away in the top-left shelf to put PSU ahead, 1-0.

Dutra contributed in the Vikings shot tally with four in the match and nearly scored two goals, one ball ricocheting off the crossbar and another punched high of the net by the keeper Savannah Abercrombie.

It was all PSU in the first half as the team maintained possession of the ball on their half of the pitch. The midfielders and defense did not allow many through balls in the Vikings backfield and only forced Jarvis to make one save in the half. Esty Geiger and Michelle Hlasnik were major pieces to the Viks athletic play.

The Hornets would not rest though, as they took control of their offense in the second half and peppered the Portland State goal with 18 shots and 10 on target.

Halfway through the second half, a through ball was in the goal box and Vikings were out of position. Elece McBride collected the ball and fired at a wide open net. Junior Toni Carnovale quickly made the run into the box and walled off McBride's shot in the air to keep the shutout alive. The Vikings would clear the ball shortly thereafter.

Early in the second, freshman Eryn Brown played a ball into the box to attempt to put the nail in the coffin. Amber Fenton was not able to get to the ball in time on a disheveled Sac State defense, as the Hornets recovered for the clear.

Portland State closes the regular season with a 9-9-1 record and a 5-2-0 Big Sky record, a program-high. The Vikings will meet the Hornets Nov. 5  in Flagstaff, Ariz., in the Big Sky Semifinal.
