PORTLAND, Ore. –
Five Portland State players scored in double-figures, highlighted by Lexi Bishop's 23 points, as the Vikings downed visiting Western Oregon, 94-83, in an exhibition contest Thursday night at the Stott Center.

Bishop shot 9-of-11 from the floor and knocked down both of her three-point attempts, and Kelli Valentine made six of her eight shots on her way to finishing with 15 points.

Always known for her 3-point shooting, Bishop said her success against Western Oregon was due in part to playing more freely.

"I think in past years I've focused too much and thought too much out on the floor," she said. "I played loose and free tonight and was able to knock down the open shots. It was a lot of fun."

The NCAA Division II Wolves kept up with Portland State's frantic tempo for much of the first half and found themselves down just 32-31 with 5:35 left until the break after a jumper by Laurie Clifford.

A basket by Keaton McFadden and a fastbreak layup by Bishop jumpstarted a 15-4  run by the Vikings that gave them their largest lead of the opening period, 47-35. PSU eventually went into the locker room up 47-40.

Bishop scored the first six points after intermission to push the lead to 53-40 and Western Oregon never seriously threatened again.

"We definitely can run the floor. Ninety-four points that was scored ... we knew we could get up and down," said Portland State Head Coach Sherri Murrell.

"I really enjoy playing this team because they are different than any other team we play. They have smaller (players), they spread you out and they put you into defensive positions where you have to really move your feet. We didn't do that well (in that area), but there are a lot of things we can work on and build on and that's what you want in an exhibition game."

Kelly Marchant added 16 points and four steals for PSU, while Eryn Jones and Courtney VanBrocklin both finished with 10 points.

VanBrocklin, a 5-foot-7 guard who transfered from Boise State and sat out last year, led the Vikings with nine rebounds and seven assists.

For Western Oregon, Rylee Peterson and Sara Zahler each scored 23 points, and both had double-doubles as Peterson pulled down 11 boards and Zahler tallied 12 of her own.

NOTES:
PSU shot 47.2 percent, including 51.4% in the first half ... the Viks forced 23 turnovers and converted those into 23 points ... Portland State used a 21-9 run to start the second half, effectively putting the game away ... the Vikings tallied nine blocked shots, getting two apiece from Keaton McFadden and Karley Lampman ... Lampman and Valentine each had three steals ... PSU got 39 points from its bench. Western Oregon got seven ... WOU shot 88 percent from the free-throw line, going 22-of-25 ... PSU officially opens the season on Nov. 14, at Washington.
