HILLSBORO, Ore. - Three seems to be the magic number for the Portland State women's soccer team as they again defeated a Big Sky opponent, Montana, by a 3-0 score. It's the Vikings fifth shutout of the season and they have now outscored their opponents 15-0 in those five contests.
It was Montana that first lit up the scoreboard for Portland State as Lady Griz defender Courtney Watson attempted to clear a PSU cross with a header. Watson was unable to get the correct angle on the clearance put the ball in net and gave PSU the 1-0 lead.
Outside of the own goal, the Montana defense played tough, only allowing Portland State to five shots. The defense disrupted the Viks passing lanes to break up the looming scoring chances. On the contrary, the Vikings did not allow the Lady Grizzlies to a shot on goal in the first and second half and only allowed Montana to six shots overall.
In the final 15 minutes of the match, Portland State's offense came alive and began to pepper the Lsdy Griz net. Senior Frankie Ross gave PSU an insurance goal in the 80th minute of play. The defense tackled Ross in the box, but Ross escaped with the ball, worked to her right and put the ball in the back left corner of the net.
Seven minutes later, the Vikings were awarded a corner kick. Sophomore Amanda Dutra, from the right corner, sent the ball over the set pieces to freshman Hannah Kimsey, who timed the header just right and fired it to the left corner of the net for the Vikings third and final goal.
Senior Rachel Jarvis played all 90 minutes of the match and was not tested for a save. It was her second shutout of the season and the fourth of her career.
