SPOKANE, Wash. — The Portland State women's golf team battled a tough course Mondays as the Vikings opened the Kalispel Invitational with the first two of three rounds at the Kalispel Golf and Country Club.

The Vikings recorded more total birdies over Monday's two rounds than they did over the opening two rounds last week at the Wolverine Invitational (20 this week vs. 15 last week). But more holes over par – including several double and even triple bogeys – forced the Vikings to scramble.

The Vikings improved from the first to second rounds Monday. They followed up a 25-over 313 in the opening round with a 20-over 308 in the second, putting them 13th overall with a 36-hole score of 621. Boise State leads the tournament with a one-under par 575 (292-283).

Cynthia Valerie Ong – fresh off her runner-up finish at the Wolverine Invitational last week – leads the Vikings individually at three-over par for the tournament (74-73=147). Ong closed her day strong. She was four-over par through her first 10 holes of the second round but then finished with three birdies and five pars over her final eight holes.

She's two strokes behind three players tied for 10th overall at one-over par. If she can make that up over Tuesday's final round, then a second straight top 10 finish could be on the table.

Caithlyn Ong led the Vikings early on. She recorded four birdies over an early seven-hole stretch in the first round. But she finished her last seven holes at five-over par, including a double bogey on the par 5 16th. Ong avoided a double bogey in the second round but also didn't record a birdie as she finished her two rounds at 10-over par (75-79=154).

Maddie Dustin avoided a double bogey in her second round as well. It came as part of an improved latter half of the day for Dustin. After a nine-over par 81 in the first round, Dustin shot a five-over 77 in the second. That included two birdies on a pair of Par 3s.

Momo Udom also bettered her score from the first to the second round. After a 16-over 88 in the opening round, Udom shot a seven-over 79 in the second that included three birdies.

Francesca Tomp had a tough stretch over the front nine in Monday's second round but shot just two-over par over her last eight holes of the day.

The Vikings will look to improve Tuesday, when they close the tournament with a final round starting at 8:30 a.m.
