FARMINGTON, Utah — Portland State's
Cynthia Valerie Ong made up a three-stroke deficit over the final two holes to tie Montana's Zoe Bar-Or for medalist honors at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate Tuesday. It's only fitting, then, that the pair share Big Sky Golfer of the Week honors, as the league office announced Wednesday.
Â
Ong caught Bar-Or with a dramatic finish to her final round at the Missoula Country Club. Bogeys on the 14th and 16th holes put Ong three back from Bar-Or with two holes to go. She gained a stroke on the 17th when she parred and Bar-Or bogeyed. She then made up two strokes on the final hole with a birdie and another bogey from Bar-Or.
Â
Ong finished the third round one-over par with a 72. That was her best round of the tournament after a four-over 75 and two-over 73 in the first two rounds of the tournament.
Â
Ong's win alongside Bar-Or makes her the Vikings' first medalist since Valerie Hernandez and Jasmine Cabajar won a pair of dual tournaments in the spring of 2021. No Viking had earned medalist honors at a non-dual tournament since Tara Finigan won the Bobcat Spring Invitational in April 2018.
Â
Her win at the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate followed a runner-up finish at the Wolverine Invitational, Sept. 14-15, to open the season. Ong set a 54-hole career best at the Wolverine Invitational, shooting a five-under 211 (75-68-68).
Â
She heads into the final week of the Vikings' fall season with a season scoring average of 73.33. That would be a school record if the season ended today. She's scored 75 or lower in eight of her nine rounds so far this season.
Â
The Vikings conclude their fall season next week at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, Oct. 5-6, at the Tacoma Golf Club in Tacoma, Wash.
