TACOMA, Wash. — The Portland State women's golf team put a tough opening round behind it to improve by 16 strokes in the second round at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational Monday at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club.
Â
The Vikings shot a 12-over 300 in the second round, tying their second-best single-round score of the season. They finished the first day of the tournament in last at 616 (316-300), but their second-round improvement meant they sit only one stroke behind UC Riverside and 10 strokes out of 13th.
Â
Cal State Fullerton leads the tournament with a seven-under 569 (286-283).
Â
Cynthia Valerie Ong paced the Vikings with an improved second round individually. She improved by eight strokes from the first to second round, following up a first-round 78 with a two-under 70. It was her first under-par round since she shot back-to-back four-under 68s to close out the Wolverine Invitational on Sept. 14-15.
Â
Ong was steady throughout Monday's second round. After a bogey on the par-4 13th hole – the fourth hole of her second round as she started on the back nine – Ong made 10 straight pars before finishing with three birdies over her last four holes.
Â
The steadiest player for the Vikings Monday was
Caithlyn Ong. After an opening bogey on the par-4 eighth hole, Ong parred 15 of her final 17 holes in the first round. She had another tough stretch with four straight bogeys from the 10th to 13th hole in the second round, but then stabilized with 11 pars and one birdie over her last 12 holes.
Â
Ong finished Monday at six-over par (75-75=150). Her 28 pars between both rounds tied her for third among the tournament field. Nevada's Amy Na led the field with 30 pars Monday.
Â
Maddie Dustin matched
Cynthia Valerie Ong with an eight-stroke improvement from the first to the second round. She followed up a first-round 83 with a second-round 75. She played her final 13 holes at one-under par between 12 pars and one birdie. Dustin sits tied for 87th with a two-round score of 158.
Â
Momo Udom improved by two strokes from the first to the second round, finishing the day tied for 94th at 162 (82-80).
Â
Francesca Tomp had two early birdies but withdrew from the tournament after a first-round 81.
Â
The Vikings will wrap the tournament with a third round Tuesday. That will conclude the Vikings' fall season as they played four tournaments in four weeks.
